disciplerocks's Ford Focus "build" thread

If you have access to Explorer stuff, that's the way to go. I'd pull a whole motor and just swap them.

Its just to much wiring, anti theft, etc... stuff to want to mess with when it comes to the explorer stuff. Plus I want to run a manual transmission and that would be more to do on the explorer setup then I want. With the f150 at least there's a chance I can find a computer that is made for a manual transmission and make things just that much more simpler.

But if my goal is to have a 302 pushing 325hp, simple stock pcms aren't going to do the trick either and I may just stick with keeping stuff simple and old school.

My plan is to get a roller block, have it freshened up, all new forged internals but get the best stock heads (no need for aluminum ones unless I come across some for the right price) I can get, port, polish, them, need to learn how to do that anyways, and anything else, a nice cam...you know, what we all dream about in our sleep.

Basically do my research by getting on some mustang forums or any other Ford forums.

Above all, I want it to be "street friendly".

Honestly, I love the skill involved in tuning a carb. I enjoyed rebuilding the carb on my F-100, such a great feeling of accomplishment came form hearing it fire right up. And there is NOTHING like the sound of a carb'd 302. :headbang:

That being said, the Ranger is still getting an EFI setup. Why? Because computers are superior to carbs, plain and simple. That, and... well, uh I still need to meet OBD-II standards. :icon_rofl:

Then pull an Explorer motor without the wiring. It already has the best heads and intake.

I will have to see what the pick a part in Indys definition of a v8 engine is i.e. what can all come on it for the price they ask for.

Like I said though, this is going to be years down the road, saddly, until I get a house of my own. Right now I'm living in an apartment, second level, and not easy to build an engine on the deck let alone get it to the ground when it's complete. But if I could start building one now, you bet I would. Right now my goal is to finish getting my current project on my truck and that is 4wd, almost done but can't find the time to finish it.

Added teflon to the vacuum tree, RTV'd my EGR block off plate, and deleted the IAC. Trying to fix my hesitation/stumble.

Had to throw this on to check fitment. Going to go with coil packs to give me more room.

Did find this really good article about the distibutorless swap to give me more room for the SC.

Got everything I need for distributorless conversion minus the coil packs. Along with another intercooler and a 5.0 Explorer throttle body for $38 after taxes and fees.

Now my dilemma. I don't mind loosing the MSD coil, cap, and rotor, but I don't want to loose my $80 Massive plug wires. I don't know of a coil pack that keeps the same style plug wire as a distributer.

Yes! An update!

Can't solve your problem here but damn do I love what I see!!!

Looks to be a 5.0 from an explorer due to the oil cooler.

96-97 explorer motor, pulled yesterday...

SVT

Yep Explorer motor. Going to build it and swap into the Focus.

Is that coil good? Id buy your coil/plug wires, and maybe even the distributor...

Yes its good. I'll get with you once its removed. Not sure how long it will be though.

Adjusted the rod on my slave cylinder. Seemed to make the drivability improve. I'll fine tune it a bit more.

Made some progress on the short block. Shouldn't take very long to install the cam, hone, install rods/pistons, and heads. Thinking about saving some cash and reusing the head bolts since they are not TTY bolts. Still need head gaskets, F150 lower intake, and Mustang oil pan and pickup. I may just swap the oil pan and pickup tube from my current motor once its out. I'll have to swap the flywheel and clutch as well.
