disciplerocks's Ford Focus "build" thread

I had my fan fuse go out on me a month ago during a ranger meet qn I didnt know it. Drove it all around the entire day and was wondering why it was getting so hot (I dont have a temp gauge hooked up yet) but I would bet I easily got her to above 220 driving around in town.

But going down the highway, no problems...go figure.

I will defiantly look into using a braker.

Right now I have a 30amp fuse that replaced the 20amp it had.

Ok definitely a fuel issue. Rented a tester for $160 and I have ~40 psi at idle, but when the throttle is opened, it drops to ~20, maybe lower. Swapped FPR with the Explorer on I have so I know its not that. The Focus pump is rated higher than the Mustang so I'm not sure how that could be the problem.

Here are the flow rates for replacement pumps

Mustang
Maximum Free Flow Rate (gph): 50
Maximum Pressure Range (psi): 90
Minimum Free Flow Rate (gph): 40
Minimum Pressure Range (psi): 80

Focus
Maximum Free Flow Rate (gph): 75
Maximum Pressure Range (psi): 110
Minimum Free Flow Rate (gph): 55
Minimum Pressure Range (psi): 85

You are 100% sure the Focus pump specs are in standard, not metric? Ford has started giving us everything in metric first.

Those are for replacement pumps. Many Mustang owners swap to Focus pumps because of the higher flow and fairly cheap cost.

Just making sure.

is it a new pump?! or old pump?, and have you checked the filter???

also are you sure you have enough gas in the tank???

I helped a buddy one time with a 67 VW that wouldn't start, he had changed everything, and also new carb, and fuel pump, spent 5 days going over everything, turned out he was out of gas.

It's the voltage to the pump constant or does it drop when you open the throttle as you have said?

I am using stock wiring to the pump but I haven't checked voltage. It has a quarter tank so there's plenty of gas. Its an old pump but I had no issues with it pre-302.

Dustin, what size is the fuel line? Also, was the focus return or returnless fuel system? Returnless systems regulate the pressure in the tank, so you might have to bypass the in tank regulator...

SVT

It was return less but the regulator was on the fuel rail.

Dustin, just for giggles I would check the return line. You can check it by disconnecting it under the hood and having someone blow compressed air through the line. Then listen for it at the filler neck.

When I first got my Mustang back in 1995, the fuel pump went out within a couple weeks. When I put the tank back in, I pinched the return line between the tank and the floor pan. It ran like complete crap above 2000 rpm. Unfortunately I paid Tunex to find the issue because back then I was fresh to working on cars.

Guess what? That replacement fuel pump is still in the car too.

If it was pinched, the pressure would raise at idle. It wasn't doing that. Plus I had the return line ran to a gas can for a while and not to the tank. So I know it was getting fuel back.

did you check fuel pressure with the vacuum line to the regulator disconected? if that helps look at your vacuum routing.
