Has anybody head of running a lower gear ratio in the rear than in the front? A guy at school told me he had 4.11's in the rear of his truck and 3.93 in the front. Does this make any sense? Why would you do something like that? I asked him why and he just said "That what they recommended at the offroad shop." So it is his truck but he has no idea.

it is not common practice but it is done if run tires of different diameter. I am hoping its not on a daily driver.

In loose dirt or mud its not a big issue but on hardpack or pavement with the same dia tires it will cause breakage

I would recommend against it. Even on loose gravel, having a ratio not the same will cause bad shuddering and shortly after that breakage.

Very loose dirt and mud is about the only place you could run different ratio's

What truck does he have. never heard of 3.93's/.

I've seen guys run different gear ratios during sand hill shoots, as they claim that the front tires spin a little faster pulling them up and allowing better steering. I really can't tell you if it helps them in the long run or not, but either way... you have the right to make fun of this dude for being stupid. FAIL.

Unless he is running the exact right tire size to equal the back... he is stupid to take it on pavement. But for an off road only truck and that means soft stuff only aswell... it makes sense. with a setup like that if you get stuck in 2wd and switch to 4wd.. the front tires which aren't stuck will spin faster then the rear tires hopefully pulling you out. and what gofast mentioned about the sand hill climbers.

If he is driving it to school (which involves pavement) hand him an extra large heaping side of EPIC with that FAIL. Either he is a moron or the guys that sold him different ratios are. Actually both would be lol :icon_twisted:
