diesel swap

Thanks. Sorry if I come across as uneducated... kinda lost touch with Ranger terminology. Been mostly into modding my F250 lately (and that's a whole different set of terms there!).

I am so lost on rangers it's not funny :icon_confused:

I've always kept one as a "backup-vehicle"

I've just now started modding them :icon_hornsup:

get me on a kick about SBC's or 6Bt's though and I'm good to go :yahoo:

LOL

Frank

I get ya, get me off of RBV's, Camaros, or Landcruisers and I have a lot less info to give out, lol...

6.2 and SM465 3spd w/granny, your junkyard has more than one of both, i'll bet on it.

Ok, now I guess I'll throw another log on the fire...

I've been in the research stages of swapping an Isuzu 4BD/1T into my Ranger now for about a year. The 4BD is pretty much the same thing as the Cummins 4BT, same displacement, same # of cylinders, pretty much the same hp/torque ratings, and close to the same weight (800lbs, give or take). The way I plan on getting around the weight issue is to throw a Dana 60 under the front and set it on chevy 3/4 ton front leaves.

The only problem with these motors is most of them came with a 5 spd tranny, all of them 2wd, but these weren't topload 5 spds. They are setup through linkages, because they came in the NPR cab-over trucks. I'm sure you could get them to work, and then run a divorced T-case. The way I've found around that problem, is to get ahold of a Dodge NV4500 5 spd, with the manual transfer case still attached (any Dodge newer than '94 has passenger side drop). Then there is a guy over on the 4BT swaps forum that sells an adaptor kit to mate the Dodge tranny to the Isuzu bellhousing (I believe last time I checked he was getting about $750 for it).

The icing on the cake would be if you found one of these engines with an automatic tranny. You would still have to run a divorced t-case if you have 4wd, but it would beat having to mate a different tranny to the thing. The only problem with finding one of these is they are like finding a needle in a hay stack, very few of them were made. And the Isuzu has a weird bellhousing pattern, so no off-the-shelf tranny will bolt up to it without an adaptor. There are only two kits on the market that I know of, the one from the guy at 4BT swaps, and another one that allows you to run a GM automatic tranny, but with that system you have to run the Isuzu clutch plate with the GM torque converter, it sounds complicated, thats why I'm planning on going with the Dodge tranny.

Hope this was informative enough for you.

I wonder how the older cummins 12 valve would do in ther? Might not be bad sry but what is the 4bt?

Cummins 3.9L 4cyl Diesel engine .....

you could look for a 3.3L-4.4L caterpiller. thats what i want to do.

Well, the thought of the Isuzu was covered, briefly. I am going to be taking agood look at the John Deere Diesel that is in the new wood chipper, and see if I an get anything on it as far as hp/tq ratings, maybe bell patterns. I know the little monster is stout, but I want to know more about it. I need a new engine for my BII, and while I have 3 2.8 V6s, including a leftover crate motor, I love the thought of Diesel power in the BII. Any thoughts/ input?

unless u put on highway miles the only benefit to havin a diesel would be originality. in all reality id love one to but for the work and money it would be much more efficiant to buy a diesel or drive what i got. consider that.

Hmmmmmm.....I would name that project Woodchipper Broncho II. I love the though of a diesel ranger/broncho II, I say go for it.
