diesel swap

The Mercedes 5 cyl diesel does sound like a pretty good engine to swap in. I've been contemplating it for a while now. You can find used Mercedes 300s from the early 80s for fairly reasonable to yank the engine from. And the power levels are acceptable.

What transmission did you use? If I did one I would want to make an adapter to use my M5OD-R1 already in my Ranger.

Diesel Swap

Hallo from Germany.
Sorry my English is not pefectly but i hope you understand me.
The swap was a easy job for me im a master mecanic with a own garage for all cars. im use a ssangyong transmission,, it keep the 1:1 4X4 Transmission than the Ranger a borgwarner. im cut the front driveshaft and male the rearon 3 cm longer. im cut the Firewall for make room for the cylinderhead. Im keep of the aircondidtion move the oilfilter in front to the regular batteryplace and move the batterie to the right side.

So which engine model do you have? What vehicle did you get it from?

The Mercedes diesel that is fairly plentyful in the United States is the OM617 from an 81-85 Mercedes 300. The engine puts out about 125 hp in stock form but can be tuned to 145 hp without any major modifications, just turning up the fuel pump.

I took a look into a good diesel to swap into it the ranger and ford has a 4.5 6 cylinder powerstroke (basicly the 6.4 with 2 cylinders cut off). They talked about the swap and other stuff about the engine at this site

Another thing to note is id wait off until duramax (I know im sorry i hate chevy with a passion (why i have "chevy eater" on my mustang rear hatch ;) ) comes out with their 4.5 its supposed to be better then Izuzus current engine now but wayyy lighter and with sequential turbo chargers

really like your truck joebleifuss:icon_thumby:

i been thinking of a benz motor more and more for the next build aimed at my next to drive daughter. likely the vw or jeep variants if i stay small displacement though...the 3.3 is less attractive after a closer look at the dub motors.

ford has an easier to fit v8 as well. that 4.5 v6 is not something i would swap over a well laid out 6.5 gm build unless i needed to meet current emissions. the mechanical diesels are most attractive to me though i readily admit the tunability of the electronic ones is the best way to achieve economy and power with cleanliness..

im use the 602 Sprinter and T1 Engine 2,9 Liters 100 Hp no Turbo. its enouht for ride and offroad. the Diesel have ore tok than the 2,9 Gasoline.

..

Which VW motors are you looking at? TDI? They are fairly small in displacement at 1.9l or 2.0l (the two commonly found in the US), lightweight, easy to fit in a Ranger engine bay and have decent power. The only thing I didn't like about them is the use of electronically controlled injection. If I go diesel in my Ranger I'd rather have something with mechanical injection.

Here some detai Picktures from my swap. By the 4 wheler was it easyer to wit the engine bagwards
cute the firewall out. Build a new transmissionbar moved the oilfilter and so on. The Oilpan com from Ssangyong Musso it fit for the ranger also the transmission its the same 4 whelertransmission than the borgwarner ford. for electric im using the ranger wires and convert it to the mercedes, the RPM speedometer com from the musso it works wit the generator to pin "W" the shifter im ordering from USA for 35 $ & 30 $ shipping its fit to the ssangyong transmission its the T5 like mustangs and camero. im think in the states isit easier to order just a pumpadapter and convert it on a used t5 tranny. Im think in teh states the ssangyong is not so popular car than here, but in swizerland and england isit very popular, and no problems for a wreking car. Im buy one for 500 Euro is maby 800 $ and tok all Parts out what im need. My hole conversion inkl german pasinspektio was so 800 Euro and it is wright now a cool diesel with low price for 100 Km We in germany calculate Liters to 100 Km and now im need for 100 Km 8 Liter Diesel. If somebody like informations from the conversion give me a mail and i hope i can help you. My englisch is not perfectly butz i hope you understand me. my last vacation in california was in 1991 an it is a long time. Ther im bued all old Opel GT parts and shipped to germany. the first time when i was 1988 in california i buyed an Opel GT 69 and restored fullsice an converse a 6 Cylinder 3.6 GM engine init. It was so quick like a modern motorcykel on 4 wheels. My another pickup what im own now is a Mercedes 124 what im cut of to a Pickup. Bevore it was a stadion wagon

I love your other pickup, that's awesome!

The Ssangyong that you speak of is nonexistent in the US and Canada, as far as I know. It even sounds like you have a different transmission in your Ranger than we have over here. Most of our manual transmissions in Rangers are made by Mazda.
