Just out of curiosity what was the point of including a water in fuel light on the rangers dash? On my 98 it’s in the bottom corner and you can see it when the suns on it. When I took out the dash to replace the lights I noticed there wasn’t a light in the socket (from the factory).I know these dashes were used on the explorers as well but I can’t recall that dash being on any vehicle with a diesel. Only other thing I can think of is maybe a diesel was in the works and they designed the dash to accommodate before they scrapped the diesel idea.

As a guess, maybe a universal instrument cluster for all Rangers? Pretty much everyone other than the US and maybe Canada got diesel Rangers.

+1 ^^^^

Our body style Rangers were used worldwide which used mostly diesel engines, but I would also expect there to be a place for "glow plug" light

South America was probably the only other area you could get that era Ranger with a diesel but they did exist.

Just a universal cluster. My 84 Ranger had 4x4 indicators in the cluster, but it was a 4x2.

Well my 4x2 has 4x4 lights as well along with cruise (which I don’t have).

did not know they sold this model elsewhere. Figured it would be tailored to the country.
also wouldn’t South America be kph?
I guess they could just replace the face of the gauges
But that raises the question of why wouldn’t they just cover it up and not make it transparent?
Oh well. I’m raising too many questions.

My 85 has a bunch of crap in the dash that doesn't have anything to do with my truck too. Cheaper to just make one or two clusters.

Yep, a lot of Toyotas are that way. I had a base model 2008 Toyota Tundra 4x4 pickup. If I really wanted I could have bought all the Limited edition stuff and simply plugged into it and had it work. They use the same wiring harness regardless of which trim package, so it would have been very easy to turn a base model truck into a limited edition simply by picking up all the higher trim package stuff that you would want and simply installing it.

When I had my 84 Ranger I thought several times about installing light bulbs behind the 4x4 lights and having a switch somewhere to turn them on. This came about because my 84 Ranger had the center caps on the wheels but I guess to several people they looked like the manual hub engagement knobs, so I was always getting asked if it was a 4x4 LOL. Nope, not even close, even the local Ford dealer tried telling me it was a 4x4...I told them there were a few very vital missing components LOL...

Alright speaking of dealers, funny story:

Back when I first bought my truck I took it to the dealer for everything it needed as I was young, stupid, and wanted a guarantee on the services. The last time I went in (Nov 2019), I brought it in for an oil change. When I went to pay for it the guy tried telling me my torque converter was shot and needed immediate replacement. So, me being the gentleman I am, I walked him out to the truck (customers aren't allowed in the shop but I welcomed myself). I opened the door and had him look inside. I then proceeded to ask him if he still wanted to sell me a torque converter as I point at the shifter and clutch pedal. I also remind him that I was in the month prior to get a clutch installed. But hey at least he didn't make me pay for that oil change lol.
