daily doubler build

i was just thinking about this yesterday...whats going onn???

haha, I've been waiting for someone to start busting my balls.

Block, crank, pistons, rods, etc. are currently at the machine shop getting worked over. I guess the holidays have them backed up?

Thanks roto! Its a love hate relationship, me and my truck haha.

I posted this up on Pirate, so I figured I'd throw it over here as well and see what my TRS brethren have to say:

Alright guys, I've been thinking.

I haven't driven my truck in a LONG time, and I need my mojo back. I still haven't heard from the machine shop, and once I do, I still need to buy a rebuild kit, rings, gaskets, pushrods, headers, etc. Depending on what they tell me, I may need new pistons as well.

I'm guessing all of that to be damn near a grand by the time all is said and done. Plus probably months before it all comes together.

It look like 2 hours to pull the 3.0L. Stupid easy. I'm sure putting one back in would be the same.

I'm thinking of buying a junkyard 3.0L (~500 bucks), bolt it in, and be driving it again in a weekend. Then take my time building the 4.0L and swap it in at a more convenient time, like after graduation, after I get another DD, whenever.

Another option would be to buy an oil pump, fix the 3.0L I've got, and toss it back in there. I don't really trust a 183k motor that has been run dry for a while though. I'd call the 500 bucks for a <100k motor insurance that it won't crap out on me in a week.

I know what I was thinking when I dove into the 4.0 swap, but I may have been a bit ambitious. All this shit is taking WAY too long.

What do you guys think? It'll still be gutless, but will probably run better than the 3.0L that was in it, and it'll get it back on the road.

well....if ya gonna do a 4.0 swap anyway.....

why not get a JY 4.0 ( still less than $500 ) and go ahead and swap it in and wait to build up the "good" motor later.....

but, if ya don't wanna do that, get a JY 3.0 and have some fun....

just a thought....

I priced OBDII 4.0L's before I got my donor explorer. They wanted 600+ for a 60k+ 4L. They came with a warranty, but I think they were just long blocks, no electronics, etc.

By doing the 3.0, I'm avoiding all of the swap complications. I could have it driving in a weekend, no electrical issues to work through, not have to worry about working out any bugs, etc.

too bad you werent closer, Id give you my whole truck shell with engine for 500$. And that 4.0 is a beast.

You need to go to pull a part near you www.pullapart.com The motors there are about $149 complete depending on location price and you can get all the electronics, wiring harness and ECU for that price, and a warranty is $25 more. That's what John is running, I went to PAP when he hydro locked his motor and did the swap for him, he's been wheeling the piss out of it ever since!

Wow, that is cheap! I looked em up, closest one is in Indy, which is just under 4 hrs for me. Could easily do it in a day trip, but I'd be looking at ~100 bucks in gas. Not sure I'd be too excited about driving that far and pulling the engine myself. I'll have to do some calling around.

Lets see, $149 for the motor (tax, warranty and all call it $200), $100 for fuel and $50 for drink and eats (lets face it, we get hungry!!) Total $350 and one day gone...Still way cheaper than the $600 just for the motor not counting the additional $$ for harness and ECU...

I definitely agree, but I've got the harness and ecu from my old engine, so that's not really an issue. My yards have em pulled already, sitting on a shelf, with a warranty. It would be a pain pullin an engine, in the middle of a yard, 4hrs away from home, blah blah blah.

hmmm, like I said, I need to make some phone calls.

if you decide to make the run to indy and need an extra set of hands i could meet up with ya in chambana. I've been meaning to go for quite a while but just keep putting it off.

That shaft you need pressed for the doubler, I may no a guy can make you one (not press them together, make one). Dad's going to talk to the old machinist in Alabama!
