daily doubler build

ended up cutting the center out of the auto one like I had planned, and went ahead and installed it.

Got the clutch installed. trans installed. fluid in trans. changed the engine oil. bled the slave. added coolant. topped off ps pump.

I just put my 3.0 trans harness on it to see if it would work. Starter doesn't even attempt to turn over.

The engine harness has 2 plugs that mate with the trans harness (for the auto). My 3.0 harness fits one of them. I looked at the auto trans harness. one of the plugs is identical to my 3.0 harness (obviously). That plug has the speedo sensor plug on it, and I'm thinkin reverse lights, so that's all I would need.

The problem is (and why I think my 3.0 harness didn't work) there's one wire that jumps from the 3.0 style engine harness plug to a component plug that's attached to the other style engine plug (follow that?). That component plug is the neutral safety switch for the auto trans.

SO, I read where I can jump wires to bypass it, but that means I"ll have to use the auto harness, with all of the other unnecessary crap on it. Also, I don't think the reverse light plug is the same on the auto as it is on the manual, so I'd have to track that down, repin the correct plug so it'll attach to the manual, etc.

I'm not sure what I'm gonna do at this point. My plan as of now is to go down there, jump that one wire to bypass the NSS, and see if the thing starts. If it starts and runs fine, then I can worry about cleaning up the auto harness and finding a way to make the reverse lights work, or finding a way to make the manual harness work, or whatever.

It's alive! Neutral safety switch was it. Got my reverse lights to work too. I only tried once, but I'm pretty sure my 4wd isn't engaging. I think I read something where you have to ground a certain wire cause on the autos it has to be in neutral for you to engage 4wd. Grounding this certain wire tricks it into thinking that its always in 'neutral'. So I may have a little more wiring work to do, but i'm not too worried about it now.

Exhaust from the 3.0 didn't work with the 4.0, so I did a little rippin open header. Don't worry. Not too much. Engine didn't even get up to temp. I'm gonna try and schedule an appointment with the exhaust shop early this week.

Oh yeah, speedo doesn't work either, all other gauges do. Gotta look into that.

I used my 3.0 radiator and shroud. The 4.0 intake tube laying on the shroud sticks up too high and I can't shut my hood. I'm gonna see if I can make the 4.0 radiator work tomorrow, or the 4.0 shroud with the 3.0 rad. I gotta be able to shut my hood haha.

I've got an 'in cab' vid of it running. Sounds like ass open header. Fukit. I'll upload it for you guys.

edit: Here's the vid. My interior is still all muddy from the bog I ran like a week before the 3.0 died. Nasty clay.

Just cruisin in 1st down a dirt lane. Gave it some juice and it instantly broke the tires loose. Still sounds like ass. lol

Looks good, Bray!! How you like that 4.Power?? When you get the exhaust on it, you will feel it even more....As far as the speedo goes, the VSS plugs into your Tcase, so check the harness plug and VSS head on that...

Thanks! It feels great to have it out of the shed. As for the power, its noticeable now, but I'm not overly impressed. I look for it to run 100% better once it has exhause/o2 sensors hooked up/etc. I'll pass my judgment after all that's done.

Just a quick pic at full bump. I was lifting the front of the truck by the bumpstops. Looks like I've only got about 1" of compression before my trac bar mount gets into my frame, so my quest for more compression may ultimately be limited by this:

On to my speedo problem. This is the trans harness I made:

The black plug at the right, and everything under it is my 3.0 harness. The gray plug is from the 4.0 auto harness. The only wires going from the gray plug to the black plug portion of the harness is the 2 wires for the reverse lights. There's a jumper wire connecting two pins of the gray plug as well (neutral safety trickery).

Evidently the speedo on the auto harness comes from the gray plug rather than the black one. I need to find a schematic to see what pins from which plugs run what. I'm thinking there's two wires in the gray plug that run to the speedo, just like there were two wires from the gray plug that ran the reverse lights.

As I was loading it on the trailer I tried to engage 4lo. 4hi works, but 4lo doesn't. Makes sense. 4hi would be able to be engaged while moving in drive, and it probably had to be in neutral to engage 4lo. Need to find which wire needed grounded and get that taken care of.

Other than that, its on the trailer waiting for the exhaust date. Looks like Weds was the earliest they could get it in.

Slowly but surely, your getting the little bugs worked out :icon_thumby:

Yep! Hopefully the hard part is done (getting the engine in and running). Now its just a matter of time before its dialed in and runnin like a champ.

John, when I get this thing dialed in, I'm going to drive it up to your house and do a huge burnout right in the middle of your fawking driveway.

:D

Why don't you just bring the wheels and tires up for the trailer, and i'll go wheeling with you (with my trailer queen, of course.)

That sounds like a plan. I've still gotta pull the wheels/tires off of that thing. I was hoping to load up the ex on a trailer to take it to the scrapyard, and pull the wheels/tires off while it was on the trailer. I'll see if I can pick it up with the loader. If I can, I can yank the wheels off this weekend probably.

I'm not in that big of a hurry. You have until after finals at least.... LOL :icon_twisted:

Thanks man, I appreciate it. :thefinger:

I figured out what wire I need to ground on the trans harness so my 4wd will work. Problem is, I got a little excited and cut all of the other wires I wasn't using (including this particular wire and the ground wire) flush with the big plug.

I can get a pick set and get the cut wires/pins out, but I need a way to reinstall pinned wires. Is there someplace that sells "crimp on" pins so I can make my own that will fit back into the plug?

If not, I'll have to find another auto harness to molest haha.

yeah i've gotten them thru the ford dealer. that is if you have a good part's department around. There is a book with all the different pin style's and they also have a book with the different molex connector's. the mother had 15 year's in the local ford part's dept. worked there till a couple month's ago so it was easy to get good service and a good discount (on most stuff) and holiday's allway's rocked. she now took over the local snap-on tool franchise so I holiday's got even better.
