Hello world - first Ranger Post!

1994 Ranger XLT extended cab, 2.3, manual tranny

I was driving down the road and the engine just stopped and has not started since. Yes, there is plenty of gas in the tank. It has the following new parts:
fuel pump, strainer, fuel filter, pressure regulator, fuel line and return, 4 new injectors.
The fuel rail was soaked in rust remover and everything was reinstalled.
The gas tank was cleaned out last year.

When I power the key on I hear the pump run and hear the relay click.
I did all this because I thought there was a pressure issue.
Yes, I got OBD-I codes: 111 and 542.
542 is because I removed the relay at one time and jumped the pump with a wire to build up the pressure, but it would not start.
Yesterday I cleared the only stored code.

I inserted a spark test tool and have spark.

Sprayed starting fluid into the throttle body and the engine will at least sputter some when cranking.

I tried a noid light and NO LIGHT during crank.

The connector was removed from an injector and there was LIGHT from a grounded test light to the red wire. So I put a volt meter on it and get 12volts.

I removed the Ignition Control Module yesterday and it PASSED at the parts store. It was then reinstalled.

I tought there would be a camshaft sensor but it looks like only California Emissions Rangers have those.

Now what?

Forgot to mention that the timing belt is intact and the marks line up perfectly.

Injectors 1 and 4 use a tan wire - goes to pin 58 on the PCM connector.
Injectors 2 and 3 use a white wire. - goes to pin 59 on the PCM connector.
There are no devices in between the injectors and the computer.
A volt ohm meter indicates 00.0 ohms on both, meaning no break in either wire.
I also checked both the tan and white injector wires against body ground and neither wire is shorted out. (If it were shorted the injectors would continuously fire and the noid light would have stayed lit - but it didn't).

Help.

Sounds like you have no injector pulse, but it should still run on starting fluid.

I would try getting it to start again, with starting fluid, and someone else cranking while you spray down the intake.

It almost sounds like the computer doesn't know the engine is spinning, which leave a bad crank sensor or a bad computer.

Yes, I have already determined that it will run if I throw gas down the throttle body.

I'm trying to determine which one to buy without purchasing both. I have already removed the computer and have the exact model number if I need it. I also have the model number of the CPS. So, the question is: "Is there some documentation stating that the CPS can be bad AND still fire the sparkplug?"

Help.

The CKP on that engine is a two-stage unit. I believe that one is for fuel, one is for spark, so yes, one side can be bad and the other good.

Good. I have already started digging in, to remove the crank sensor and the situation looks like it's going to take a while. Removed the outer serpentine belt, crank pully, A/C compressor; timing cover is loosened. Still need to remove fan, fan shroud, and Power steering molded blacket to the block.

There are two connectors (already disconnected), a 4 terminal C169 and then a single grey wire which feels really soft as if the plastic jacket could be hiding a problem, connector C1004, whatever that does...

The grey wire was actually a shield ground, labeled as black on wiring diagrams and was not a problem. I pulled the PCM but was told by the auto parts store that they cannot test it and I'm certainly not taking it to the dealer or other mechanic when I can buy a remanufactured computer for $108. I tested the Crank signal grey wire to the PCM, pin 5, and no break in the wire. The CPS and harness was removed from the crankshaft and tested with my DVOM and something happened but I cannot tell exactly what when I moved iron thru the sensor, but I'm not buying a scanner to learn more.

So, I purchased a new CPS, installed, and problem is SOLVED! <- atten admin.
