i was changing my oil today and while it was draining i decided to do a quick check of all the hoses/vacuum lines. i discovered the crankcase breather or vent hose (i think that's what it's called) was all cracked and deteriorating. it's an 8" long 15/32" inside dia. hose with a bend in it that goes from the valve cover to the throttle body. i couldn't for the life of me find it anywhere online and of course the motorcraft part no. on it was faded and rubbed off. so i went up to murray's, got a section of the crankcase hose they had there for 2 bux and slapped it on. it doesn't have the bend in it but worked anyway.

before doing this i had a somewhat rough idle and slight miss during acceleration. but now it seems to have smoothed out a lot. funny how replacing one little thing like that can make such a big difference. come to think of it, the same thing happened to my girlfriend's jeep a couple years ago. it was running like garbage, replaced that hose and it ran smooth. sorry for the long post, but i read a lot of complaints on here about rough idle and such so i thought this might help somebody...

ps...i did actually read something somewhere about how if this hose is bad or leaking it can cause poor performance and gas mileage.

Good job.

You found a vaccuum leak, which causes unmetered air to enter the combustion process, making it run shyttay.

Engine starts but dies when cold, throttle sticks and revs between shifts. I removed the air intake hose from the throttle body and found black deposit inside throttle body. I think the deposits are from a deteriorated crankcase breather hose. A warning on the throttle body says do not spray throttle cleaner on the throttle body or throttle plate. How do I clean the throttle body?

Seafoam liquid or DeepCreep spray won't hurt it.

Unless the TB is sticking, there is really no benefit from cleaning it.
