Hello, I'm currently rebuilding the engine in my '88 Ranger 2.3L EFI. Question I have is I'm trying to eliminate some of the extra emission garbage on this engine. I removed the crankcase vent/breather/oil seperator on the left side of the engine. I'd like to replace it with a push-in style breather filter but realize that I'll need some sort of baffle so oil doesn't soak the filter. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience doing this "mod" or anything like it. This "seperator" has a hose coming off it that runs up to the intake manifold with a check valve in the hose itself.

I realize this engine is used in a lot of mini-stock class race cars and was wondering what they did to eliminate this part?

Picture shows location of hole where the "seperator" pushes into the block. It's approx. 3/4" tapered fit and just pushes into the hole.

Thanks for your time!!
James

i think there are some who

use an "offboard" oil "catch can". You can find articles about that by searching "catch can" in various forums. I have prepared one of my motors to got that route by removing the breather and tapping it for threads for an aeroquip fitting...(45)

on this can you will need an oil drain and a breather on the top usually filtered...i think Moroso makes one or you can fab one..

FYI the valve cover also runs into this can so they share/equalize pressure...

so (2) in..into the sides near the top...breathe/vent out the top, and drain the bottom basically with various ways to control drain from the bottom as the vapors become liquid and settle out.

So all I have to do is pry it out with a pry bar or something?

Yes, it will pop out...but you will need to have something there...I wouldn't recommend blocking that off...too much pressure to release in the crankcase...some of the pressure will work up through the valve cover vent but not enough...
