Couple fun pictures from work

holy shite. pulling 11 000 pounds, I can maintain 65 mph and my EGT's stay right around 850-900*. I only ever see above 1000 if my foot is in it heavy with a load up a hill.

because your engine design is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay different.

I wasnt asking why or how. I was making a statement.

I have heard it isn't terribly uncommon for 7 and 8 to let go if the regeneration system is very neglected.

I don't know about the regen system causing it. If the computer sees the DPF getting clogged up bad enough it will force a regen even if the conditions aren't perfect. I do know that with the way oil flow through the 6.4 that the #8 piston and bearings are the last things to get oiled and so it is very common for #8 to be lost due to poor oiling.

I've seen shattered pistons, gouged cylinders, I even saw a 4mm hole worn clean as can be right through the #8 cap bearing. At least I think it was the cap side, the stupid things spun, but it was in the cap when I took it apart.

It take a person a second, when looking at an engine on a stand, to REALIZE that the round thing just above the stand plate is a piston pin............

That ain't no small hole son, that is a crater !

He was being cool about it, though I appreciate the support.

I've been towing with this engine for ten years. I know what I have here, which is why I have been successful using it. This engine makes a lot of power, but can destroy itself if you don't keep an eye on it. Without a load, it's a very quick truck. With a load, it's a strong motor, but if you want it to last, you watch the EGT.

I've had many situations over the years where Cummins or Powerstroke fanatics wanted to show off on me. I will tell you that this truck makes the power to answer most of them. This is not a 135hp diesel engine. This truck makes power.

I'm not exactly poverty stricken. If someday I decide I need more power I think I will put a DT466 in it. That will be after I blow up this and 2 other 6.2 Detroit motors though. My bus has a DT360 and I really like the series. I think a DT466 would be great in my pickup.

Fixed that.

And gee, adsm08, I would be happy to pit my 6.2 against your Ranger engine. Most of the people that talk yak about my truck have a set of truck balls swinging under their hitch. My trailer tongue is 1,700 pounds empty. I'm not talking an occasional thing here--my truck spends most of its life towing this.

A little JB Weld and that shit will be good as new.

If it is too big find a hunk of plate and a couple screws :icon_idea:

I would sure as heck hope so stock let alone with a turbo kit. :dntknw:

I'm not saying you won't blow mine out of the water. I think I a little 2-cylinder generator diesel could probably do that once it got rolling.

I'm saying the 7.3 (Nathan's engine) is the best one that was ever on the market.

Sorry, I am just tired of people hacking the old 6.2 when they have no experience with them. I apologize for heaping you into that uninformed lot.

The magic of diesel fuel and turbochargers is that it's like firewood--just dump it in and power comes out.

I have a 7.3 in my 2000 van and it's weak. I know it has no intercooler, is de-tuned by Ford because it's tucked back in a van, but it's weak. I'm afraid to tow with it. Passing an Amish buggy is like getting an Olympic Gold for this thing. It does get excellent mileage though. Plus, it sounds cool.

My other experience with 7.3s is when I borrowed a 2003 crewcab dually from n9emz 3 different times to pick up stuff from the East Coast. That truck had a 6-speed and supposedly 275hp and 525ft#. Once I put my trailer on it, it was slow. My truck you stomp on the gas and it GOES. This thing was slow. I was in the hills in Penn and downshifting, which is unbelievable. Finally, i noticed that once you set the cruise the computer would give the engine the fuel. It was very strong with the cruise on and I didn't have to downshift. But accelerating with a loaded trailer was still a problem as you can't have the cruise on for that bit.

My bus/RV has the DTA360 with a 6-speed and though it's only rated at 185hp, I'd love to have a pickup with that motor in it. It feels a lot bigger than that.

I drove M813 6x6s with 240hp Cummins 14-liters in them pulling 155mm howitzers back in my youth. A 5.9-7.3 engine with a turbo would have been a huge improvement. I totally value horsepower.

Is that a Moline with a Marville-Schrebler or a Zenith ?

Hey ADSM....... Hold on, I'll go get a picture of it.....
