Yes. However, I'm told that they tolerate being fed homemade fuel, and can be pushed for stoopid mpg like the old VWs

I hear @pjtoledo needs more curios hanging around...

I hated those things, they had no power and at idle the tailpipe would shake up and down 6 inches. Diesel Escorts and Tempos sucked too but people held onto them. They were so gutless you had to continually downshift for hills and we replaced several worn out shifters.

Yeah, but if they'll eat used motor oil from my fleet trucks as fuel, it's now effectively free fuel for commuting.

Idc how little power it has, free is free, and I'm a cheap f*ck.

had an '82 VW Jetta diesel.
slow, hell yes.
downshift for hills??? not only that but more like back up a mile and get a running start.
definitely learned to anticipate and plan moves in traffic.
on the good side I made it from Tampa to Toledo Ohio with only 1 stop for fuel. total for the trip was $17

That's impressive. I suspect it could be done with 2 stops in my wife's Versa. 1 Maybe if you had it full when you left, drove till it sputtered and filled up again. Definitely wouldn't be $17 though. More like $50.

I've seen a few of these early diesel Rangers pop up on market place in the past year or so. Seems odd that so many are suddenly appearing for sale, then I look at the diesel prices at the gas station...

Can't say I haven't been a little curious about them. Gotta wonder how that little diesel would respond to a bit of forced induction and extra fuel.

I wonder if you could do that and still run it on used oil? I actually have a potential source of used (mostly hydraulic fluid) at work. We usually pay to get it hauled away after it's strained and water separated. IDK how it would work out with the EPA though. I think the hauler does provide some kind of certification of disposal.

What, turbo and still run on used oil?

Don't know about that kind of oil, but people run the 7.3 power stroke on bio diesel and it's turbocharged.

I'm far from an expert on diesels or turbos, so just spitballing here. The "fuel" goes in down stream of the turbo and is ideally burned off during the combustion process. Add to that diesels work on compression, having enough compression (and maybe a glowplug for assistance) to ignite the fuel instead of spark. Turbo once spooled is going to increast that compression. As long as it's tuned properly I don't see where it would make a difference if it's on pump diesel, bio diesel, waste oil, or some combination there of. Just no red diesel.
