I have a 1991 Ranger with a 3.0 and an automatic trans. I am seriously thinking of converting to a manual trans, What I am unsure of is what year and engines can I use a trans from? Example, can I use a trans from a 2.3 or from a 4.0 if so what years will bolt in? Any information will greatly be appreciated.

3.0L has a unique bell housing... you're stuck with finding a 3.0L manual.

Yes, if its a 2WD then you need a 1991 to 1997 3.0l 2wd manual transmission, it will have speedometer cable hook up you need for 1991 model, 1998 and up didn't have that

Mazda B3000 used the same M5OD-R1 manual transmission as Rangers, B3000 = 3.0l

2WD and 4x4s used different tail shafts on their transmissions, so not interchangeable
If its a 4x4 then you can used 1991-2008 3.0l 4x4 transmission, because speedometer cable is on your 1991 4x4 transfer case not the transmission

car-part.com is a good place to look for used parts in your area

RonD thanks a bunch, this is more info than I had hoped for. So my best option is to find a 91 to 97 donor truck.

Yes, get trans/mount, flywheel, drive shaft and pedals
I would get new clutch master/reservoir and slave, and self-adjusting pressure plate with new disc and bearings

Drive shaft needs to match your model, i.e. regular cab, extended cab or long bed
And Steering column if you want to get rid of the automatics shifter
Its always good to change rear main seal on engine when transmission is out, not required just a good idea
Also u-joints for the same reason

The M5OD-R1 uses ATF not gear oil
And its easier to drain and refill when its out
It only holds 2.8quarts of Mercon V ATF bone dry so not expensive to change fluid in it

M5OD-R1(M5R1) is a transmission "model", like Ranger is a Ford model, "Ranger" doesn't mean its 2WD or 4WD, or regular cab or extended cab, its just the "Model", a small light truck
M5OD-R1 is the "model" of the manual transmission used in Rangers and other Fords from 1988 to 2011
So M5OD-R1 is not specific to 2WD or 4WD or what engine it fits, its just the "model" of the transmission

Thank you for all the info and helping this old man. Greatly appreciated.
