2.3L ('83-'97) Cold air intake


The air underhood is warm to hot, so you’d be putting in a warm/hot air intake. The stock intake takes in air from the grille area, and supplies more than enough air, so you might want to put your money into something else. 🙂

Usually I'd just agree with that statement. But being an 84 is the original system intact? Not that there is likely a kit to replace it out there.
 
Yes, I'm more curious on what the current situation is, I'm betting there's no bolt on setup for an '84...

I do agree with the others though, with Rangers they usually stuck with the biggest engine filter setup and used it on all engines, in the early '90's they used the same filter for all engines, I'm using the stock filter on my 2.3L turbo engine and it's perfectly fine, I should put a vacuum gauge on the inlet side of the turbo though just to check...
 
It is intact but on the air filter box a few of the bolts had broken off so now I’m down to run it just vibrate a bit
 
Like so many others who believe in the cold air intake idea, I read a few posts before fabricating my own. I thought to devise a before/after study by recording mileage to see if the 3.0 engine ran better with cold air. The test was done in the summer. I averaged 20.5 miles per gallon BEFORE. Next, I fabricated a nice cold air intake enclosing the K&N air filter in an insulated box which was joined to an air scoop that brought in fresh air through the grill. I drove the Ranger for a couple more months. I didn't really notice any change in throttle esponse. The AFTER scores remained the same.

Some months later I just got rid of it. I kept the scoop, but didn't even bother with any kind of shroud. The mileage didn't change. Perhaps the results would be different in warmer climates, perhaps also if I had aftermarket headers.

The temperature inside the engine bay is warmer, of course, but the air filter sits in the coolest part. It gets some fesh air. The temperature differences may be important for a stock setup. but I rather doubt you will see much difference when you are done.
