Looking for some help on a no spark issue for a 87 2.9 v6. Truck was running great with no issues, left house to run a errand about 20 miles away. when I parked car and came back it fired up as usually and ran for maybe 10 sec then stalled out and then after that it was crank no start. Always keep the code reader in there so I pulled codes KOEO and got 18c (loss of tach signal and spout (spark output) I’ve gone through a lot of tests listed below which I have seen on some other posts and am still having no luck.
fuel specs are good and when I sprayed starter fluid there was no change. relays check out and you can hear fuel pump come on. Ignition coil, plugs and wires check out good which were replaced with in the last year. I read on another forum about a bad IDM resistor could cause code 18 but mine looks good and there are no signs of bad wiring to that. Rotor is spinning when cranking and the distributor was replaced with in the last year as well. I tested control module with multi meter and checks out, I also have 2 other back up Motorcraft ICM which I tried to be sure and still no luck. Wiring connector for the ICM looks in good condition. Last things I could think of were bad computer or pick up coil, and dreading the job of replacing the pick up in a year old distributor I had a buddy who let me swap his computer from his 87 bronco II that runs and still no start.
I’m at the point right now where I think it may be the pick up coil but looking for some insight to any other tests I can do to make sure it’s actually the pick up coil before I go and pull the distributor. Is there a way to test pick up without pulling the distributor?
