Code 167

I just tried out my new INNOVA 3145 code reader on my '93 XLT and on the KOEO portion, got a 111 result – no faults detected. After 32 years of near daily use. I'm impressed.

Then I did the KOER test. After figuring out that I hadn't done the "goose" test when prompted to I repeated the whole process and, when "10" was displayed I goosed the engine pretty well. I did not floor it because I'm frankly afraid to, but I did run it up pretty good. Then I got a Code 167.

The description of 167 in the INNOVA manual is, "Throttle Position sensor fault during dynamic response test."

The description in my Haynes manual is, "Insufficient Throttle Position Sensor change during Dynamic Response Check."

So it appears I didn't run the RPMs up as much as it wanted, but that is the only code I'm getting. Should I even worry about it?

Also, the instructions on the "wiggle" test are sort of incomplete. What is it?

-thanks

You should go at least a little over 2000 rpm during the goose test or it will set codes.

The wiggle test is for testing for intermittent shorts or opens in the wiring harness. Once you get the computer in that mode, you go around and pull and wiggle all the wiring and peck on the sensors, the computer is monitoring all the inputs and outputs. If there is a change, it will send out a pulse, and also whichever circuit gave the fault it will put that circuit code in memory.

Thanks much. I know I ran it up over 2K RPM and probably over 3K, but only for a second. It was enough to trip the flashing "Check Engine" light, which is part of a successful test, I believe.

I will try the wiggle test sometime, but for now, if that code 167 is all that's coming back from KOEO and KOER tests, I'm not going to sweat it. The truck is starting and running better today than in the past 27 years, except for what seems like a low idle and rich warm up; after warm up she purrs.

Thanks again.
