I'm new here, so hope I do this right but anyways I picked up a 83 Ranger the clutch won't disengage so I've replaced all the hydraulic clutch stuff (master cylinder, slave cylinder and line) and it's gotta brand new clutch too. We've got it bleed out perfect but still won't disengage. So I removed the slave cylinder and the clutch arm/fork I can move it back an forth with my fingers. I've been dealing with it for about 6 months now and I'm tired of not getting anywhere. So any ideas or help will be appreciated.

sounds like you still have air in the system. if master is like my 94 you will have to flip it over to get air out of it because the high point is the plunger so air can't escape until lines are higher.. also verify that you have the right slave for your year and that quick disconnect is fully engaged. once air is out of master bleed slave.. whole process should only take 10 to 15 min.

It sounds like you have an exterior slave, I'm not familiar with those. I believe the master is the same as later years and thay can be a bitch to bleed. There is a good 10 min. vid on bench bleeding somewhere on site. Here it is;

Another vid showing a different way;

And a thread of someone else with a similar system;

Some other possibles for the problem;
-I had a master that the bolt flange broke. You couldn't see it until a close inspection but would allow movement so the clutch wouldn't fully disengage.
-The firewall can get stress cracks that also allow movement of the master.

Good luck,

Richard

We've done all that and its bleed out great. What ever is causing it is the clutch inside the bell housing but I don't know anything about clutches.

seized pilot bearing possibly (not allowing input shaft to stop spinning)?

clutches are very simple

master pushes fluid into slave
slave pushes throwout bearing into fingers on pressure plate making friction surface on plate retract and releasing clutch plate making input shaft stop spinning.

Nope that's not it either, everything's new but the clutch arm. I removed the slave and I can move the clutch arm back and forth like its not connected to anything.

also occurs to me that input shaft could be toast.

you might also try to put truck up on 4 jack stands and with truck running and in gear look at rear wheels if spinning actuate clutch to see if wheels stop spinning if you do this 2 things BE CAREFUL and if you can do it safely actuate clutch from under neath truck.. you could just have a defective master or slave

arm could have come off pivot in bell housing
sounds like you need to pull trans back down

We tried that too and the hydraulic clutch system is good but clutch won't work and why can I move the clutch arm around like its not connected.

Ok so I gotta spend more money to have someone do it for me I'm disabled I can't fight with it but I'm going to try to do it myself anyways after the rains gone or stops so I can at least try lol but thanks for the help so far fellers hahaha keep the ideas coming tho every little bit helps!

So when I undo the tranny do I have to watch out for anything to come unlined or spring out at me. I haven't pulled a tranny in over 10 yrs so what should I expect to happen and/or find and what do I need to look at? What's the pivot an where is it?

What engine trans 4x4? Information would help

Usually back and down with trans after everything is disconnected. Get help and use 1 or 2 Jacks to support trans weight.

Its the 2.8 4speed 4x4

You will need to pull y pipe and rear trans cross member and drive shaft and shifter also line to slave cylinder and wiring to neutral safety switch and reverse lights and starter.

I've got most that done but do I have to watch for anything to fall out or come unlined
