Checklist for pulling 2.5 engine?

The older style cross members that the transmission sits on can be removed or dropped out of the way. I didn't need to do that because the body was off the frame at the time. There may be enough clearance to lift them both without doing that but it eliminates the problem before starting.

Removing the rad and fan might give you enough room and that's usually done without saying. Without knowing your skill level I usually don't assume anything...lol

My radiator and fan are already out... I'll check on that crossmember.. thanks..I'm taking it all in I promise!!

Skill level, good with tools, bolting/unbolting, problem solving(tough bolts/nuts), rigging, twisting, beating, banging..
Engine mechanical wise, never been in a motor more than just changing parts I knew were bad such as alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, radiator, water pump, thermostat, brakes...

I'm fine and experienced with torquing procedures..

I'm a PipeFitter by trade(20 years).. I work for specialty welding companies doing boilers and heaters... Former Marine, and a little OCD so I have great attention to detail and I don't like to accept failure at anything..

Perfect qualifications for working on Rangers...

I would also suggest buying some fresh exhaust manifold bolts if you don't have them already...just because they are the most likely to be in bad shape...the others are usually good in spite of their appearance.

specialty welding eh? are you near Ohio?

a few years ago when I was about 60 I pulled the manual tranny from my 2005 2wd. had the truck on 8" ramps, took the tranny out the bottom.

on the exhaust pipe nuts, as a general rule if you can cut or drill the nuts then split them for removal it leaves the studs intact.

with the Rangers being fairly high, the cherry pickers with the short beams don't lift high enough. you'll need one with long legs and beam. those load adjusters work great as the engine needs tilting.

Ratcheting wrenches with a flex head make getting the top transmission bolts out fairly easy. :icon_thumby:

No. I'm at home near New Orleans right now taking a break from working shutdowns..

Yeah I'm hearing that the exaust bolts will be bad...I'm trying my best to be prepared.. I'm not sure I follow on the "cut or drill the nuts and then split them"

Cherry picker engine lift I have being delivered is a full sized one.. but again, I'm planning to my overhead beam setup with combo of chain hoist and come along.. just have the cherry picker coming just in case and I had to rent something from the place accepting my engine delivery, per the handshake deal we made.. he's unloading it off truck and delivering it to my house with the cherry picker.. (I got free shipping as long as it's going to a business)

I just bought a set today!! Figured they may come in handy!!

If you pull the engine and trans together, plan on taking the hood off... maybe just take the hood off anyway, it gives you so much more room and way more light.

My vote would be against pulling the trans at all - and rock/gravel work area is not going to be fun with a cherry picker. I'd get a couple pieces of plywood to put under it so that it rolls. When you get some weight on it I imagine it will be very difficult to move.

Bell housing bolts on a 4 cylinder are easy from the top or bottom. Ratcheting flex head gear wrenches or a really long extension(s) and swivel. Easy

I have already decided that I will pull the hood off..

Yes I've thought about the rocks with the cherry picker.. that's why I'm planning to use the chain hoist.. I have 2 beams, with a 6 foot span, so I can lift from one with chain hoist, and pull from the other with a come along.. and I can roll the truck out from under it if I need to..

Thanks..

Got beer for sure.. I'm actually pulling it all apart right now... got all the top junk off or out the way.. eating my dinner right now(at midnight) and about to crawl under disconnect the tranny..

Only problem I've had so far that was unexpected or unplanned for-- power steering pump pulley... note to self, and others that may not know, gear puller is NOT the correct way to pull the power steering pump pulley!! And, said pulley is definitely not steel.. it's some sort of fibrous plastic/composite material.. (ask me how I know! ).

Only other problem, my fault.. I don't have any thing (wrench or deep socket) to fit the nut on the ground stud on block... no way to go get one until Saturday so I'm probably fixing to just cut it and crimp another lug on to it before I go back in with new motor....

Motor mounts were much easier than I expected!! Exaust bolts were fairly easy..(I soaked them in pb blaster and kept juicing them every other day for almost 2 weeks.. my new motor actually already has exaust manifold attached, but I think I rather the extra wiggle room without it...

Now if tranny gives me no fits, I'll have this thing out shortly.. I'll spend a day or 2 cleaning my engine bay before I go back with new motor.. going tubing Saturday so I'm taking a day off from it!!

And... it's out!! Took me 14 hours... by myself, no help.. with breaks..

Damage report, parts to order... or fix...

Power steering pump pulley

Stripped bolt head on water pump, no biggie, extras on new motor...

I broke the dipstick tube on transmission, or it just pops back in maybe? Haven't looked at it yet, tired, been up all night-- headed to bed...

I think that's it...

I wish somebody would've warmed me or reminded me about the starter!! I never even thought about it.. had to unhook the wires hanging mid air.. no real big deal.. only standard nuts on the whole deal, them 2 nuts on starter.. but the little 3rd one was metric..

My overhead lift worked perfect... truck did pop up quite a few inches!!

Congratulations...

14 hours...well, you will cut that time down on future removals because now you know.

Power steering pump pulley

What happened to it? I have one if you want it. :icon_thumby:

14 hours isn't too bad for the first time. That'll come down the more times you do it.

I hope I never have to do this again!! But I like the experience....

I broke the pulley trying to pull it off with a gear puller instead of a pulley puller which I now know exists!! I just ordered a new one, but thanks.. it'll be here in a couple days.. waiting g on my gaskets and a few other things to get here as well.. I'm just deep cleaning my engine bay today...
