First off, i'm gettin a new exhaust, so today i was ripping out the old exhaust and i was planning on reusing my old catalytic converter. after i cut it out, i could hear a bunch of metal rattling around inside the cat. the end close to the muffler was fine but the end that connects to the y-pipe was destroyed.

here's the pic, all this crap poured out when i took the y-pipe out.

could this be screwing up my MPG's? NC state inspection law says that i have to have one and they are EXPENSIVE:bawling:

hmm, looks like the front bed disintegrated. That could certainly effect MPG. Could also make it run like a dog.

There are some places that are cheaper to get them than others. Check your local laws too, a universal fit one that does the same thing will cost less than $100 where my price on a bolt in is 220.

I don't know if it would mess with your MPG's my truck never had one.

I think he said that he doesn't have to pass emissions (in another thread). We aren't technically supposed to endorse gutting or using gutted cats here, and yes, the blockage will mess with MPG.

Im sorry if this sounds mean and is a thread jack but I laugh whenever a thread of someones says its so had to pass emissions, in WI I dont have to take my 92 in, thank god, but those guys in Cali and othe rplaces wher you still have to put em thru emissions, I feel bad for you...good luck

universal cats are around $50. a good shop can tie in to that goofy flange these rigs have

No inspection or emissions in IN.

in NC after a car is 20 years old you dont have to get an emissions test anymore. mine is an 88, so they just visually check to make sure you have a cat here. congratulations on not having emissions test though

i didnt gut it (on purpose) as far as i know, it's the original.....i reckon old age got the best of it.

yeah, autozone sells a new one for $239!!!! screw that, i'm hopefully gettin a parts BII soon and i'm just gonna take the cat off of it, supposing it's not just as bad as mine was.

Yeah I know you didn't do it on purpose. That was meant more for Funnyman. Age probably got the best of her, but if it's running too rich it can melt them.

Hope your parts truck has one in better shape.

do i adjust that screw on the throttle body if it is running too rich? or is it something else?

just slice the flange off the front of the cat you just accidently gutted and have an exhaust shop put a universal in there, problem solved.

Maybe where you are from, but here in the middle of Missouri a universal cat installed is gonna run you at least $200 installed.
