Check out my catalytic converter!!!!

Rule #1 of Fuel Injection: Don't touch the screw on the throttle body. EVER.

No, if it's running too rich it's either a bad O2, poor spark, or a leaky injector.

do i adjust that screw on the throttle body if it is running too rich? or is it something else?

You can't adjust your fuel mixture. It's set in the ECU.
The screw on the TB is a throttle stop. Don't mess with it.
Idle, mixture, and timing are all not tunable.

My high-flow universal converter was only $75(know somebody), but retail was just under $100.

Put it on like I did mine(2.5"pipe), or using 3" pipe ovaled/squished to fit flange.

The TB Screw is for the baseline of the TPS, If I remember right....

A decent cat that I know would work for you would be a Magnaflow 2.5" Universal Fit Catalytic Converter, Part Number 53006. They're all over Ebay and I've seen them on some people's 2.9's here. 75 bucks!
I've been looking into it since I might be in the same boat...I gotta make it through inspection soon with the original cats.

i dont think there was anything wrong with that stuff. i just replaced the plugs, wires and distributor cap after i got it running, the o2 sensor is factory (i think) so i took it out and i'm gonna get a new one. if i can find a good deal, i'm gonna get new fuel injectors, otherise i'll just clean them out as good as i can.

i'm kinda leaning towards this, especially for right now. there are 2 cats on mine (not sure if thats normal) the back one, closest to the muffler, is fine, so i think i can put it back on. maybe it'll flow a little better now that all the crap is out.

Be sure to check downstream of the cat that went into meltdown. Any debris caught in the downstream cat can cause a restriction. This may cause the converter to overheat and also meltdown. Bad news.

I have removed some posts and cleaned up others in this thread. Please do not encourage removing/gutting or tampering with emissions equipment. TRS does not condone the removal of catalytic converters.

Cats don't last forever. If it was mine I'd be thinking of taking both old cats out an putting in one new cat (usually when there is two, it's a pre-cat and a real cat) and throw a new o2 sensor in. Truck should run 100% better then. And I'd probably just use a universal cat and weld the flange onto it.

Of course, if it was me, I'd probably be trying to come up with the cash to do headers and a stainless exhaust while I had it torn apart too, lol.

oh i am doing headers, that was the plan before i found out my cat was dead. i'm gonna do headers, get a universal cat, new pip to the muffler, new muffler, and then new pipe out the back....oh and a new 02 sensor.

Not true. In NC, if the vehicle is a 95 or older it doesn't have to get an emissions test.

ahhhhhhhhh, when i worked at jiffy lube (bout 10 years back) we always told customers the 20 year rule......we werent the sharpest knives in the drawer

Im sorry if this sounds mean and is a thread jack but I laugh whenever a thread of someones says its so had to pass emissions, in WI I dont have to take my 92 in, thank god, but those guys in Cali and othe rplaces wher you still have to put em thru emissions, I feel bad for you...good luck

Don't feel bad for me, my 94 Explorer and 92 Accord still have no problems passing emissions, and I still have the original cats on both vehicles. The Explorer and the Ranger are actually due for another test in April. I'll make a post bragging about them passing with flying colors.

found a universal highflow cat at pep boys for 72.99 and i'll probably just install it myself once i get a new muffler and some pipe

^Would you mind posting pics when you do? Its on your build thread so I'm sure you will...... I've been thinking about doing this with my truck
