We've replaced the fuel safety shut off switch on an 87 Ford Ranger 2.9l after it ran for a week without issues and then suddenly, it shut down and would not restart. Worked with the safety switch and thought it was the problem. We replaced the switch with a new one and also had to replace the wiring harness in order to attach a three prong connector for the two prong. The engine fired up, and ran about a 1/4 mile and shut off again. No warning, nothing. We cannot figure out what is causing the problem. What is strange is that yesterday, this happened while using a 1st generation switch we grabbed from a salvage yard. We reset the switch, worked the ignition switch to get fuel through the fuel line and it would not start. Left it overnight, went back this morning before heading off to get parts and wires and it started right up. Drove it home, replaced the 1st generation switch with the new switch and as stated above, it died at 1/4 mile and won't start after resetting the switch. We've recently had the heads replaced, prior to this, but it was running with no problems.

We haven't a clue as to what we need to do at this point. Please advise what else to check and how.

Thanks.

Classic TFI or ignition module symtoms....remove and test at least 3 times. Most parts stores will test it.

the other thing that you can do to help yourself is make sure all your grounds are good

I second the motion on the grounds. That issue kept me "grounded" for awhile!! haha

Don't 4get the ground at the coil

I had bought an 88' b2 some weeks ago that a former owner had done an engine swap in... it quit me twice w/o reason after changing a fuel filer. in the course of remote mtg the tfi and trubleshooting everything i found that the ground wire at the coil was loose tightened it up..and voila!.....

a rig that has been worked on...so many places for mistakes...in hooking it back up,....it drove me crazy tiil i found this issue..grounds seem to be so important on these tfi motors.....

i'm now a firm believer in checking grounds.....in the old days..who wood'v worried about grounding the coil?....but who knows what all that ground wire is connected to?

just one mans experience about grounds...nothin like hearin the motor run.....
