No permit needed in Alaska. If you can legally own it, you can legally carry it! The way it should be!
Ummmmm. you migh want to rethink that shotgun comment. The problem with shotguns is hollywood. They always present a shotgun as something you just have to point in the general direction of your target to make a kill. THAT is not true. You avtually have to aim them. I would NOT want to face a shotgun in the hands of someone who knew what they were about. A 12ga slug will stop just about any game on the planet with a well placed shot.
Well I'll be damned, I've hunted most every animal in North America that can be taken legally and didn't know that about buckshot and cats. Now, I don't hunt domestic animals, but I think if you wanted to kill one with double ought, you might want to sneak up alot closer than 50 yards and not give them a warning shot. All of the coyotes I've killed in the last 45 years with #4 buck sure as hell didn't know it wasn't a slug or birdshot.
I ain't talking about the furball on your couch! I picked up a guns and ammo once where an editor swore off owning a shotgun ever again when he pissed off a large cat with it and it came for him. Luckily his buddy was right behind him with a rifle. They took the cat back with them and counted the pellets, and found almost all of what was supposed to be in both of the shells, so he got a solid hit. Problem was, none of the pellets individually have that much stopping power themselves, so he didn't penetrate far enough to kill it. I think they said it was about 45lbs, can't recall the breed. Yeah, that doesn't happen every time, but still. I've also witnessed a small black bear that was trying to break into my cousins house for a month before we decided to do something about it. We figured a double barrel 12 guage with 00 buck would do the trick... nope. 7.62x54r worked, though. (game warden said we could kill it)

Rifled deer slug, Iowa state law prohibits hunting deer with a rifle aside from a late doe season in bottom two rows of counties in the state. By late January when the rifle season in those two rows of counties opens they are extremely spooky and more time is required to get one than I can afford to take off from work.
When you start breaking bones and ripping internal organs in half, things start to lose the will to keep going pretty quick. The big bodied 9ptr I got a couple years ago when less than 10' after I put a single 20ga slug thru his heart, and they are a lot tougher than a person.
I have done everything from hunt deer to shoot clays with my shotgun, I know how they work and how they shoot.

That's a little different. I hear so much about people buying a shotgun as their first firearm for home defense, and they expect it'll blow a person clear through a wall. If it makes you feel better, I WAS drinking last night. But I still say shotguns are very ineffective unless they have slugs.
The second amendment is about the founding fathers not trusting the
people would come after them, and because they didn't trust future
elected officials it was their way of saying: "Obey the constitution or
the PEOPLE will pop a cap in your ass and give your job to someone
who will"
About 2 years ago, a man was leaving Wal-Mart, in the parking lot a pimp was beating one of his whores, the man leaving wal-mart made the mistake of looking over to where the commotion was, the pimp ran over to him and shot him in the head.
A year ago, a man was leaving a wal-mart and a guy came up to him, pulled out a gun and demanded his money, instead of his wallet, he pulled out his gun and killed the perp.
The first Wal-Mart was in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The second was in Little Rock, Arkansas. Both are in nice areas, not slums or run down neighborhoods.
You never know what a deranged person is going to do, or when you may run across one. I carry a Sig P220 .45, I also carry a fire extinguisher. I hope to never have to use either, but as someone said earlier, when you DO need it, you're going to need it REALLY bad.

Agreed, a Taser, stun gun and Inferno Pepper spay is a much more effective and NON LETHAL replacement. The gun has it's place, it depends on what you "got going on".
I agree to some of this. Pepper spray is good if someone is approaching you in a parking lot, but not posing a threat to your life. In Arkansas, you can spray them. It's only illegal to use pepper spray in the course of a crime, any other time you won't be charged.
So you want someone to meet deadly force with non leathal force? Pepper spray, burns for just a split sec, but with enough adrenaline you are shot, taser, about the same...
I wish Federal law would overturn all of these stupid state laws regarding carry and make it legal for anyone with a permit to carry outside of their home and car.
Nooooooo, anything the feds give to you, the feds can take away in a blanket law. This should be up to the states, but the states should recognize the constitution that they agreed to when they joined the Union.
If you whip out your peice to counter somebody that is coming at you with a gun... you probably won't fair any better than somebody with mace. Either way with a semi auto he could get a couple shots off before you clear the holster.
That's a pretty broad statement, that really depends on the situation. A concealed weapon carrier has one advantage, they KNOW the other guy has a gun, the other guy doesn't know THEY have one. You have to be smart.
If it's all you got, it's all you got. A frapachino is going to be of even less use. If there is a social break down, metro areas aren't really the place to go. I would be hitting some steep, high and very difficult trails to make camp and would be VERY leery of any strangers.
There was the subject of rebellion earlier, individuals won't be able to change the federal government if the need were to come up. It would be the states that would have to do it. Since the National Guards have, for the most part, been federalized, we may be falling deep into a hole where their may not be a return. Myself, I hope not.
If you're not familiar with the "New World Order" conspiracy, you should really read up on it. Personally, I don't subscribe to the conspiracy, but there are parts of it that I believe would happen if the conspiracy were to come true.
Regarding training, this is what I do. It's called IDPA or International Defensive Pistol Association. It's a timed/accuracy competition. I can't compete at THIS level, but I do go through many different scenarios to keep myself sharp and prepared for any number of situations that may arise.
I disagree, I use 6 shot in my Rem 870. Not much penetration, but that's the reason (i don't want to have to replace the sheet rock in 4 rooms from using slugs). It has a wide pattern and will cover a hallway. I'm not looking to get into a gunfight. I'm looking at protecting myself and my wife. If I have to leave our sanctuary (bedroom), I'm taking my shotgun and my Sig. Since we don't have children, I can't see the need to leave our bedroom. If I hear someone stealing my Plasma TV, I call the cops, secure the bedroom and wait for them to show up.
If someone DOES come in the bedroom, there won't be any penetration issues with 6 shot at that range, say 4 to 10'.

And I sure as heck won't be going to an urban area. A shotgun is a weapon I can survive off the land with as well as defend myself. I have more, but if I had to pick one, that would be it.
I don't know if I have stated this in this particular thread, but I have had to defend myself with deadly force once killing a man, and had to pull my gun in a robbery at a dollar general a few years ago. The man I had to kill had raped and murdered a 30 yr old, and her daughter of 5, not 5 minutes before kicking my apartment door in. I put 4 rounds of 9mm hollows into him before he stopped, the woman had maced him just minutes before. I never wish anyone have to defend them selves in a deadly way, but I hope any of you would stand up for those who cannot stand for themselves, like the woman and her child. Or the elderly clerk getting pistol whipped at the dollar general because there was only $45 in the drawer and he wanted more......
Ok, speaking of carrying guns, I carried mine for over 11 hrs the other day. Gets really heavy, even my sub compact taurus PT 24/7 pro .45 acp. I am looking at the ruger LCR, or at the pawn shop there is a springfield 9mm compact, any suggestions?

Looked at glocks, but they are soo big, note there is no gun store around here that will let you fire a gun. Heck our first indoor shooting range opened about 2 weeks ago, but he also doesn't have any available to shoot.
I'll have to disagree because of my personal experience.
I hunt quail in south TX. We were cruising around the ranch and treed two bobcats. The landowner wanted them shot so my father-in-law, with his .410loaded with #8, and me with my 20 gauge loaded with #7.5's both shot the first cat at the same time. It was dead before it hit the ground. My father in law has also killed a coyote with a 20 gauge and bird shot.
