Hey I need some help my Catilytic converter is shot I want to get rid of the cat and put shorty headers and performance muffler and exahuast. Will I have to change some stuff like injectors or mass air sensors ect. Or will it be fine and good to go?
Go to a few muffler shops, find one that is decent and let's you watch. Mine has 3 chopped 2 and straight pipes them $400. Usually only one of the cats throws the emissions codes.
A mechanic shop will rip you off.
They will weld the pipes on, leave the muffler on.
Straight piping won't hurt the truck, leave the muffler installed it helps with back pressure. My truck is only 4 more years until vintage so I left the O2 sensor and that cat installed because it wasn't shot, if your lucky it's the downstream ones that are clogged. They should also be able to clear the codes and you can drive off right there.
You will get what your wanting but for way less money and time by straight piping and you won't have to overhaul the engine and exhaust.
If you want to do headers, fix the cat issues first before that because you want to make sure nothing else is going on after that.
Just make sure you replace the one for emissions if it's damaged, I'm in Texas and I got away with removing the other 2 but I'm still not vintage so I have to baby the last one
you must be in houston or austin, some big city that gets smog checked, @nickname23 ?
texas inspection is done by county. i live in nueces county and we have safety inspection but not smog inspection. they do a visual for a cat and they are supposed to verify the other smog parts are still on the vehicle but i have never been failed for anything being removed, though i always leave the cat.
here is a good palce to get a replacement cat that won't inhibit flow in the exhaust.
@jump2000 removing emissions equipment is against federal law regardless of whether or not there are inspections in your area. It is against forum rules to discuss cat deletes and stuff like that. I have locked this thread accordingly, please do not bring up the topic again.
