Carmax clay removal- need help

I'm hoping somebody else has been through this and can help me. I recently picked up a 2011 Ranger from Carmax. The only time I was able to go check out the car and pick it up were both at night. I wasn't able to tell until I saw it in the sun that it has pieces of a brown claylike substance on it in various places. It looks to me like it was used (very sloppily, IMHO) to detail the car before selling. I've been trying to get it off of the grill and roof, but it is pretty tough. Has anybody experienced this before?

Looks like excess compound to me. Are you sure it's clay?

Try Simple Green and a microfiber cloth, and rinse. See what that does.
