My '97 is kinda a cluster of parts from what I'm finding in places, it has XLT badges on the fenders but standard side mirrors and just an AM/FM stereo and a 60/40 and so forth...

Anywho, the cargo light doesn't work, I've checked most of the fuses but need to go through them again to make sure, no manual with the thing... I have all 3 bulbs in the dome light working now and they come on when you roll the dimmer switch all the way up but no cargo light. I checked the bulbs and they are both good now, only the 3rd brake light was burned out.

Am I missing something stupid?

When you roll up the dimmer for the inside lights all the way to the top. It does click up to turn on the cargo light...have you done the click? Its real similar to the 89-94 ranger, far left click on the headlight switch turns on the cargo light.

yeah, it goes there, turns the dome lights on (all 3 bulbs) but not the cargo light. If it isn't raining too bad this weekend I'll pull it off again and pull out a volt meter...

Why not use a volt meter to see if you are getting power at the cargo light when the switch is on. That would narrow it down if its at the light or further back..... That's what I would do but hey I like easy answers and volt meters don't really lie unless they are on their last leg.

The ground wire for the cargo light is at the dome, it corrodes and fails. Common issue. Jump the ground and see if it works.

OR. someone put a cargo light lens in your truck but it doesnt have that option. Another common thing.
