CARB legal headers

I am in Calif, and I just bought an '88 Ranger 2wd with a BARed '89 Stang 5.0. The swap is done, but it has issues, like rubbing exhaust manifolds and mickey mouse looking engine mounts. So, I have a few questions that I can't seem to find the answers to:

1. Are there any headers that are CARB legal (have EO#) that will fit with this swap, preferably from an '89 Mustang?

2. Are there any off the shelf engine mount and header(not necessarily CARB legal) combination known to bolt on without issue 100% of the time? I can fab, but for the time being I want to avoid that with this project, if possible.

3. I read that the Hedman 88408 headers fit very nicely, does anyone know if there is a non-ceramic coated version of those, and what that part number is?

Thanks

2. Shelby type Tri-Y's and 85-93 Mustang Convertable mounts combined with a 157 tooth bellhousing. 3. Hedman 88400. Oh, and 1.? Is there ANYTHING legal in Kalifornia ?

someone just posted a truck ('01) on RPS (bought or built, didn't say...) with Torque Master headers, they are CARB legal. Not sure if they have anything for the older trucks.

I used these headers http://www.themustangshop.ca/product/302572/300503
They fit like they were meant to be there, although I do not have power steering. I also used 87 LX Mustang 5.0L engine mounts, again no problems and I am even using the stock mechanical fuel pump.
The only problem with the headers was they started off coated black, which proceeded to burn off with the first engine run :(

ps
My truck is an 88 as well formerly a 2.3L

Those are Shelby Tri-Y's.

Torque monsters are legal for Explorers and Mountaineers only. They have a set for beamed Ranger conversions, but they aren't CARB approved. I don't think the Expo headers will fit because of the steering differences.

I'm thinking that Hedman 88400s will be my best bet at this point as thy will blend fairly well when it comes time for smog. Being that they are black shorties I think they will look more like an OE part. They should work on my '89 5.0, right? I'm not up to speed on the differences in the heads over the years just yet.

Maybe someone knows, but don't the stock '87-'95 style Mustang header things fit?
Thought I heard that once upon a time.

Those are Shelby Tri-Y's.

I guess that is why they fit so nicely. I just figured they were generic classic mustang headers as they came in a plain brown box....... or are Shelby Tri-y's just slang for all the 65-70 mustang based tri-y's?

I tried to fit a set on my 302 but there would of had to be severe frame mods to the passenger side, I tried using F150 302 engine mounts to sit the engine lower but that made the drivers side really interfere with the steering shaft.... I even tried one F150 mount and one mustang mount... but gave up because the tri-y's showed up :) Not saying it couldn't be done apparently I just never got the right engine position for them..... too bad because I had a complete 5.0L exhaust system to use..... oh well maybe next truck.....

The Tri-Y's for the Early Mustang first appeared on the Shelby Mustang, hence the name.

Front tube on drivers side hits the Power steering and the passenger side runs into the frame rail.
Been there, made them fit,not Worth the hassle...........backed up 5 yards and punted.

The 94-95 Stang headers were a better fit on the driver's side only, Ford revised the tube layout with the #5 & 6 tubes. This is also mirrored with the Hedman 88400 & 89500 D/S header. The 83-93's never were a good fit on a Ranger.

So does the driver side fit pretty good then or just better than the older style? How bad does the passenger side hit the frame rail?

I got a set off of a '94 for free...

Sorry, are you saying that the 88400 headers have the same problem or that they don't?

The drivers side 94-95 Stang header fits. The tubes are routed differently than the 83-93 headers. The 88400 and 89500's drivers side headers have the tubes routed similarly to the O.E. 94-95 Stang header. As far as I know the 94-95 passenger side header has the same issues in a Ranger as the 83-93's did. Both require a cutout of the frame flange to fit. Or do what COPPERHEAD85 did in his thread "Hooker Header Score"
