is there a special tool to get the fan clutch off? Is the thread on this a left handed thread? 98 3.0 fwd.

The fan should be RH threads. There is a tool to get it off, well a pair of them actually. They are a big ass wrench and a big fvcking hammer.

What Adams said. You can rent them at just about any auto parts store if you want to use the correct tools. Plus you're not gonna mess your knuckles up too much.

Yeah, some stores rent the wrench set. I have this fancy jig that goes in my air chisel, but it's not cheap, and the chisel isn't cheap, and you need a pretty good air system for it to work on most vehicles.

the threads are such that the fan tightens as the engine runs.

On my 92 3.0 v6 it was a 7/8 wrench. I had to remove the waterpump and lock it in a vise on the waterpump fan to remove the bolt for the fan housing and cluth

The strap wrench method did not work with my fan clutch. I finally just made a tool. Some flat steel, drill and torch.

My father inlaw did mine by swapping two of the four pulley bolts for longer threads, and using flat iron on the ends sticking out the back. Worked OK for putting the fan on too.
