Can you swap a Mitsubishi FM132 in place of the original E87A-NE Mazda 5 speed manual?

I am helping my cousin who inherited his dad's 1988 2.9L RWD Ranger. The trans is stuck in I believe 2nd gear. They have already replaced the shifter which did not fix the problem. He went to a junk yard and pulled the trans out of their 1988, but it is the FM132 when his has the E87A Mazda tranny. Are these interchangeable, and if not, what do you think is wrong with the E87A? Easy fix? We already bought a clutch kit for it. Is that interchangeable as well?

The clutches will interchange. the transmission can probably be made to work, but the FM132 is a MUCH weaker design and will require a number of other parts, including a drive shaft. Better to not mess with it and find a proper replacement or fix the one you have.

I'd drop it, open it up, and see what is going on inside, they are very simple units.
