Hello, I am new to these forums. I have a 1988 Ranger 4X4 with a Mitsubishi FM145. It has went completely out, so I am going to get a new one to put in it. What I was wondering is if the Mazda M50D-R1 would fit with not to much trouble? My 1988 Ranger is a 4X4, will the transfer case fit (electronic)?

Thank you
Paul

Yes the M50D-R1 from any 4.0 will fit on your 2.9 engine (the '86+ Rangers and BII's have the 2.9 and FM-146, not the 2.8 and FM-145). It is a direct swap. The transfer case will bolt onto and work perfectly as normal. You will have to use a 4.0 clutch, flywheel, and starter. You will have to run a trigger wire down to the 4.0 starter and do a little wire changing on the stock starter solenoid for the 4.0 starter to work.

I just swapped in a M50D-R1 in place of my A4LD in my BII. Went off without a hitch and works perfectly.

When you do this, let me know if you have any questions.

85-87 would be FM145, 88-90ish should be an FM146, which is the same length as an A4LD/M5OD. So, it might require a clutch line change, but is otherwise pretty much a bolt in.

^True story^

I'm almost 100% positive the slaves between the 146 and the M5OD interchange, I recall the same part numbers for the slave in my dads M5OD and my 146 so clutch line should be fine.

When I did my swap, I pulled the slave off the FM-146 and it fit right onto the M5OD.

That all may be true, but given all the effort for a transmission swap, I'd suggest a brand new clutch and slave to go with it, unless they are in perfect shape.

Yeah definitely, I'm saying he can use a slave that should work with his current clutch line.

anyone know where i can find shifter parts for my Fm145. have tried Green parts & tb trans. no luck, out of stock. thanks nice web site you have here.

New to this, I am attempting to do a a4ld to a fm145 manual, pedals and everything went smooth, now im stuck. i have the slave cylinder that comes out the top of bell housing. but when i try putting the housing on, the slave hits the front retainer plate and holds the housing about 1/2'' away from trans. Anyone ran into this problem before? help please...

M5OD, search the forum for info on this, it is a very common swap and well documented here.
