Hi,

I need help for the engine layout.
Is it possible that you take a real picture of the alternator location on a 99-2000-2001-2002-2003-2004-2005 4.0L sohc?

Let me explain further why I need your help.

Well turns out if you have a Ford Ranger 2010-2011 (like me) and you want to swap the stock alternator for a bigger one, you are **** out of luck.
No upgrades for you!!
2010+ have a Mitsubishi alternator instead of a Ford 3G series alternator.
This alternator is PCM/ECU controlled. No shop in the world want to touch that!!
Just finished contacting almost 12 alternators companies.

But there is hope, 2 shops told me that a older 3G alternator would work mounting wise on the SOHC but i'm not sure if the clearance around the alternator have changed. (that's when your picture could help)

I want to confirm with your pictures before ordering a older sohc gen alternator.

Then i could create a HOWTO swap thread. WIN/WIN

Thank you very much for your help!
Laurent

Are you doing an audio upgrade? A little more detail would be nice.

Sure no problem!

I want to upgrade my alternator for my taurus e-fan and 1000 watt inverter (for camping),12v compressor fridge and a 12V whinch.

105 stock amp is too small.

180 amp minimum and 100 amp hot idle.

I know it's possible but i cannot purchase few alternators and try them.

That would be an expensive trials and errors step!

I've got the mounting specs from older SOHC engine...it's just the clearance that i need to see visually.

I have half-inch before my alternator touch the oil fil tube.

If i order an 3G alternator it will mount but if it will not clear, i'm screwed!

The electrical step is easy. You can work around it!

For the clearance issue its way harder since i cannot CUT or MOVE the filler tube!

Thank you! :icon_thumby:

Is the SOHC that scarce?

I'm just asking for a picture :)

Google Image don't give me the right years for the engine.

I trust you more than google search!

In the early years the sohc used a short alternator with a oddball mount then they switched to the 3g style mount a few years later, I know for a fact that the 04 rangers use the 3g alternator and the 3g style bracket is a direct swap for the oddball one, beyond that I couldn't tell you. Perhaps looking around for a large case 3g alternator core and testing fitment wouldn't be a bad idea. I know that the 3g alternator bracket was available through ford a couple years ago for around 70 bucks but don't remember the part number

Thanks Earl43P for the topic, i've read it. Very informative.

holyford86 I will try to find a dead alternator from early years to check fitment.

Btw, SOHC is 1998 to 2011 right?

OHV is a different beast i think (many parts not interchangeable)...

thanks!

Sohc was an option in explorers starting in 97 but was not available in rangers until 01

and OHV stopped in 2001 or overlapped a bit until ?

Just want to be sure when someone talk about x year ranger that its only a 4.0L SOHC possible engine option (beside the 2.3L duratec).
