So I posted a thread earlier today about my cylinder 2 misfire. Went and got a compression test and cylinder 2 only got 80 psi. The rest were 125-135psi. 65,000 miles, good gas, fully synthetic oil changed every 3000 and now I have burnt exhaust valves. I am sick of this truck .Looks like I am going to try and sell it...

what is the deal with the newer models and burnt valves? i kno they retuned for emissions from year to year but dam this is rediculous. seems that after the fuel system style change in 99 and the various tunes for different fuels etc cause these trucks to not last at all. glad i have my 93, shes still running no probs other than a lil oil usage after 280k miles...

Yea, its bs. Time to trade it in for something more reliable...

mine to i changed a my drivers side head a couple of months ago and now have a misfire again and its on the other side, its an 2004 with about 60k on it

That's why I am going to replace BOTH heads. I decided to fix it myself since I can get a set of heads for reasonably priced. I can do the labor myself and be done with it.

Thats a good idea to do them both,I bought the one new from Ford with a buddy's discount it was around 300 for 1..Id like to know the real cause of the problem...good luck jim

The real cause of the problem?

The real cause is prolly vacuum leaks, or coolant leaks. The engine itself is designed to run hundreds of thousands if miles. As long as the coolant stays in place and the mixture of fuel and air stays as designed the head gaskets and valves will do fine.

i still think its emission tune related, wish somebody would install a wideband o2 on a newer truck to verify...i can tell you mine is rich as hell but still tickin...although as jim said a vacuum/coolant issue is usually the death of most 3.0s (i agree with the theory entirely), just seems odd the newer models dont hold up near as long as the older models and they are all throwing lean codes...could just be crap intake gaskets/vacuum hoses...

hmmmm

this is fairly interesting. are they visibly burnt when you get the head off?

you hear any unloading valve rattle at all with these critters?

hmmmm this is fairly interesting.

P0302/P0316 codes, but no lean burn code. Not even a rich burn code if the burnt valve was spilling raw gas into the exhaust. I'm not convinced that this is lean burn as no one has the dyno/exhaust gas/visual inspection yet. If this was an overall Ford "tune" issue, we'd be seeing dozens if not 100s of these. Anyone have a TSB yet? I won't defend Ford fully yet as this Ranger will be my last Ford, but there needs to be further investigation at this point.

Redwood650, you'd do us ( and maybe yourself) a favor if you took pictures of all your valves and combustion chambers, especially this "burnt" exhaust valve on #2 and it's seat.

One small exhaust manifold gasket leak will burn one exhaust valve..
As much as we'd like to throw the little engine under the bus when it does us dirty... We still have to think of the millions and millions of them serving all over the WORLD that don't do what mind just did! So we have to look at what special happening occurred to my ride that isn't happening to all the others. Might be we sometimes draw the short straw, plain and simple.

Did he work for ford? I ask because that is what my ford hookup can get them for me for. $620 to my door.

I hav'n't pulled the head off yet. Im still doing research to ensure it's the valves before I pull the valve cover/ exhaust manifold off. Plus it's still winter here and I cant rely on riding my streetbike to work every day in the rain.

There is a TSB out for this issue and Ford know's about the issue.

My buddy looked into this TSB at his shop and I guess burnt exhaust valves are the number one cause of this.

I will definitely be taking lots of pics when I do this job as it helps with assembly. Do you think with these new design heads ford has, I can get more than 65,000 or should I sell it soon before I get to 120,000?

Also, what would you guys do to diagnose the issue before pulling the head. I suppose I can pull the valve cover off, then the exhaust manifold and I should be able to see the burnt valve from the exhaust side correct?

Would you guys bother with a leakdown test or just pull it apart since I know there is low compression?

leakdown will def tell you of a burned valve face, and tell you if its exhaust or intake as well.
