Hey guys i have 88 b2 4x4.
I went out this morning to drive to work and the depressed the clutch and it felt wierd.
I instantly new it was either clutch master or slace cylinder.
I checked the clutch fluid, which appeared to be perfectly fine, level wise, little dirty.

New new leaks on the ground, well no more then normal. LOL

So i pull it in the garage crawl under there and appears to be now brake/clutch fluid anywhere, although it could be covered up by slow valve cover gasket oil leak thats has coated everything pretty well.

I check the master cylinder and there is no leaks anywhere.

As i have seen int he past on other vehicles usually the either will be leaking when bad.

So my next step, i pinched the line going to the slaves since if it was the slave i was going to replace anyways.
I pinched and the clutch pedal will got hard but still went down slowly, and come back slowly. Release the pinch and it goes back the spongy feel.

So i am lost, is it the master, slave, or just need to be bleed some more.
Please any info or help would be gratefull.
I really do not want to drop the transmission if i don't have too.
Thansk

Sounds like a pretty solid condemnation of the master cylinder.

I am hopping it is the master over the slave. I beleive the slave was replaced before i got it cause i know he did a clutch and tob.

But i took it for a drive after attempting to bleed it. Really not much of a difference have to start it in gear. I can shift ok, maily match rev shifting. but with the clutch fully depressed it is a lot easier to push into gear, like it is apply a somewhat pressure, but not much. Almost seems as it need more throw.

Should i attempt to replace master, or will it be a waste of money. Money is tough right now. Thanks guys

Can you see any brake fluid coming out of the bellhousing?

I would bleed it real well, and then disconnect the clutch line from the slave. With it disconnected, the clutch pedal should be rock solid. If it is not rock solid, problem is with the master. If it is rock solid, problem is with the slave.

This is a very effective test. However - DO NOT push too hard. If you have significant resistance, you know the problem was in the slave. If not, it's in the master. Pushing too hard (if you get resistance) proves the master is good and could blow the line apart.

Yeah, forgot to mention that, don't push too hard on the pedal, or you could blow the master and or line. :icon_thumby:

Hey guys, thanks for the quick reply.
One more question.
When i get home i am going to try this.
I forget how to remove the line.
Is there in or clip that holds on.
I remember a white clip?
Probably self explantory when get under there. but just making sure.
thanks

Thanks for the link to that.
That was simple.
But it shoots fluid out of the end of the the hose end.
I plugged it back in and tried bleeding the system for 30 mins. barely any peddle pressue and no luck.
Still don't know if it is master or slave.
:(

Unless I'm losing my mind, it should be self sealing. Somebody else should confirm this, but it sounds like you have a problem (perhaps not the only one) in the line.

Sounds like a bad line to me....

With that sucker disconnected it should be sealed shut. Any kind of dirt/debris in the end of the line where it connects to the slave? Maybe something is holding the end of the line 'open'

If the line was held open. Would this cause the slave not to work in any way.

I am thinkg that as long as the slave adn master is all sealed as one unit.
I will pull apart and see if i can clean it some how.
thanks for your guys help,
Like is said any time or information makes it easier.

If the line is not making a good connection/seal to the slave, that could be where your loosing pressure. Did you verify any leaks yet? Out of the line? Bellhousing? Master?

Oh i see, not enough pressure going to the slave cause of a clogged line. that could make since.

No i could not find any leaks before. for sure none around the master.
Like i said i have sorta a small oil leak on from the trusty valve covers. :D
This has but a nice layer of oil on the but i can't seem to find any brake fluid inside the bellhousing.

witht he clutch depressed you can tell its pushing on the clutch some cause when in gear it will barely move and i can stop it witht he break.
with the clutch released in gear and foot on brake, it will kill it. like it should.
this indicates to me that the the system is applying some pressure.

Yeah, it's gotta be working somewhat...

Did you get it bled really well? Unbolt the master, tilt it up...

If it is fully bled, and the pedal is hard when the line is disconnected, I'm betting it's a weak slave that needs replacing.
