I just replaced my front rotors and pads on my 93 ranger. I noticed that after I get home from work(normal city driving) my front brakes smell hot while my rear drums are still cool to the touch. I don't hot rod it or anything and Its about a 20 minute drive home. When i replaced the fronts, i adjusted the rear. Is this bad?

The front brakes do more work, and discts end to make more heat than drums. Also, new rotors will have a burning smell to them for a while, kinda like Ozone. It's normal.

The rotors should be getting dark, but they shouldn't be turning blue, that's the only thing I would be worried about.

The rotors are in fact darkening and I don't see any signs of turning blue. I just found it suspicious that the rear brakes weren't warm, if it's normal though I'll let it be. Thanks for the help.

are the flex lines old? They really do collapse inside when old I've seen it on my other cars.

I'm not sure. I bought the truck with 215,000 on it so I'm not too sure of the maintenance history. Is there a way to check thier condition besides visually?

swelling where the crimp collars and hold down clamps are. brake pedal rising when driving, pistons near impossible to push back. "Been there done that!" on other cars :headbang:

And, FYI, the rear drums should be getting warm to the touch. Warmer than what I would call "cool". So if they are really cool the fronts will be warmer still.

So, I'd recheck the initial manual adjustment on the rears and then do a few stops going backward for the auto adjusters to do their thing.

I would also check that the RABS was working (or maybe keeping the rears from working). On my 93 (long gone) you could check the RABS by going down a steep hill (with less than a half tank of fuel) and really getting on the brakes. You can feel them cycle in the seat of your pants......

How much should I adjust them? Until they barely drag right?

And there isn't a rabs light on nor is there steep hills where I live. What would it feel like when the abs kicks on?

My truck the RABS was bad. leaking, but not only that, the back brakes would drag. started making the front drag also, turns out the fluid could not return back to the MC so it would just make the brakes drag. I had the shop I trust take it out. Truck stops on a dime now. way less dust on the front wheels calipers don't got too hot to touch and rear drums only get slightly warm and this is only if in stop and go traffic.

ASM knows his stuff! :icon_thumby:

Okay so i just hacked up the back wheels of the truck and put it in 2nd gear and let them start spinning. I put the brake pedal to the floor and they didn't stop. Does this mean somethings definitely wrong?

There are quite a few posts about it on the site. I can't tell you to remove
it but I had it taken out of my truck! Best thing too! The beast Stops on a dime!

As I understand it from what I've read The RABS Was to meet The new federal requirements back into the day.
