I understand that during the winter, but that's stupid IMHO any other time of the year.

When i first bought rusty #1, brand new in 87, i used the parking brake, ehh, 75% of the time. It still ended up freezing up after about a year.

No flippin way id touch one on any of my current trucks.

In 20 years, I have never had a single parking brake freeze up on me that was actively used (aside from ice over the winter).

Three of my four tractors at home are in gear as I type. Never have had one take off on me. 1940's/1950's tractor brakes generally suck, I have much more in faith in leaving them in gear than with the parking brake on. And then it is super easy to leave the things on and burn them out.

I look for flat parking spots but I do that with anything anyway. Park pawls break too. If it gets really dicy (steep) I do both.

That's the getcha.

Dad's trucks were old farm trucks whose parking brakes were anything but actively used. I would call a 95% chance if you used them you were stuck wherever you used them.

Actually though, my wife uses her parking brake with an automatic. No idea why.

Because if you park on a hill not using it is a recipe for getting the trans stuck in park.

The Expedition is our only vehicle where the parking brake isn't used regularly because the switch is shot and so we keep driving off with the brake set.

Never had one get stuck in park. Had them difficult to get out, but only on extreme hills.

Two things about using the parking brake.

1) The owner's manual says to do so, to prevent the vehicle from rolling away while unattended (yeah, I know, that's what P(ark) is for!)

2) My mom's cousin always uses the parking brake with an automatic. He says (and it makes sense) that it saves wear on the (parking pall in) the transmission. Well, yes, because the parking brake is actually holding the car, instead of a plastic pin in the transmission. The catch, though, is that the brake has to be set first, then put the car in Park.

Well the owners manual may say to use it but I never will most likely. It all depends on the environment you live in. I don't live on or near any hills and never have to park on any of them so my park drum is never in any stress. Love my flat ground around here.

How did we go from talking about the best ford truck news ive heard since the demise of the triton to parking brakes?

Apparently some people think parking brakes are more important.:D

Somebody was confused about how many pedals modern trucks have...

you mean ford may actually have created an engine with a capacity or bore and stroke of 6 to 8.2 liters and it can be a pushrod or cammer variant.?.?.?

say it aint so!

what part of michigan are you from? the flat part or the real real real flat part that uses more salt on the road then is contained within the bonneville salt flats.

flat and auto means no use...

plastic pin in the transmission??? no.

you should use the parking brake daily on all vehicles so the fawking thing works when you need it......in michigan we say froze up or froze on/stuck on as the result of the rotten ass fukin cable after 4 months of non use even if it rolled off the assembly line in september and was driven through one winter....they freeze on in july.

if you use it daily....if for some reason you drive to some place with hills...it will work fine...

and if you have been where there are real hills....you know that leaving a manual trans in 1st or reverse wont keep it on the hill unless the parking brake is on. especially if it has over 100 k miles on it....and getting an auto stuck in park....and depending on the setup you wont be able to even turn the key to start it.

Fast is from VA IIRC.

I live in the flat flat part of mi. 45 min due south of jackson.
