Black smoke?

Hey Creepin' - not to hijack the thread but - are you sure about if you unplug the IAC the engine shouldn't die. I've been having a high idle issue and somebody else posted on my thread that it should die. Not trying to diss you - I'm just confused?

I would guess it's possible to die, since the RPM's do drop. I've never had one die on me while testing before.

Mine doesn't idle down slowly or anything - it dies immediately like you turned the ignition off. I guess I'll buy a new one - hate throwing parts at the problem without being sure:annoyed:. Thanks for the help though.

when i disconnect my iac the idle gets all screwed up but the truck does not die. I figured it was working properly when this happened?

Hey guys soory its been a while, havent drove the truck to check it in a while cause its 1 of 3 trucks. LOL. I did as you said and unhooked the IAC, and nothing happened, I ordered a new one and while replacing it saw that they had capped the old one off by some sort of paper gasket. I cut holes in it as the new one had in it and like magic it did as jeepster said when I unhooked it it idled down w/o dying. I figured what the hell and cleaned the old one with Carb cleaner and it didnt hurt it. I drove it this morning and no black smoke:yahoo: The only thing now is an unsteady idle, but I can deal with that If I cant figure it out. Thanks for all the help guys, and any other advice just let me know.:headbang:

Do a search on how to adjust the Throttle Positioning Sensor to try to cure the hunting idle. You will need a digital voltmeter and backprobe the connector on the TPS. The previous owner probably tampered with that too if he blocked off the idle air passage. After that, pull the spark plugs and clean off the unburned carbon from the rich condition.

cool thanks I will give that a shot tommorow at my dads shop.

this could also be air/fuel mixture, because of the year of ranger you do have a computer on your truck which monitors every system and like most of these guys are telling you, just do the tests required to check fuel/air ratio maybe even check fuel pressure. won't hurt to try.

I'm experiencing similar symptoms along with an intermittent battery light. I had the alternator tested TWICE (actually removed from the truck and tested on a machine) and it works fine.

I will run down to the local pick and pull and grab an IAC to see if this helps. I will also check the wiring for any cracks or exposed sections. Will post my findings this afternoon.

Pulled the IAC connector and the rpms drop but engine doesn't die. Reconnect and idle stays the same. No raw fuel in the FPR vacuum tube either. After warm up lots of missing and black smoke under acceleration. :annoyed::annoyed:

Rev, have you checked your TPS? It also controls air/fuel mixture and may be faulty. Another of your posts said tune up done around 2k ago. Has this problem been since then or before tune up even? New plugs and wires, have you double checked to make sure your firing order is correct?
