The '86-88 Supercab can be fitted with the tank from a 91-97 supercab.

I upgraded mine from the stock 14.5gallon tank to the 89-90 Supercab tank.
This required:
1) replacing the top of the crossmember that ties the two
leaf spring mounts together.
2)Rerouting and shortening the fuel lines.
3)Adding the additional crossmember over the rear axle
(a crossmember that your truck simply doesn't have)
4)replacing (or removing) the center support bearing
crossmember.
5)Enlarging the keyhole slots in the frame for the wider straps
used on the later plastic Tanks.

I went a step beyond that after going through all that work
to upgrade from a 14.5gallon tank to a 17.0 gal tank I was
happy for several years, then I discovered that there was
an even larger tank... used in the mid-'90 and up supercabs
that holds 21gallons of fuel

That was a simple bolt in to replace the 17gal tank, because I had already done all the necissary work to get the 17gal on there.

That is NOT where I stopped but what I did next was WAY beyond
the scope of your question...

I'll let someone else tell the rest of the story:)

But I will say that on my recent return trip to Pennsylvania
from Indiana towing another Ranger on a dolly when I got
home I had nearly enough fuel left that I could have
disconnected the dolly turned around and drove back...

Or done a round trip to Kittery, Maine...

i gotta get the tank then. ill go to the jy down the road and ask the owner if i can pull the stuffs i need

What about an '03? I've got a supercab 4x4. Bed is coming off soon to fix rust, it'd be a good time to change the tank. 250 miles isn't enough capacity, filling up all the time drives me crazy...

I'll finish the story because I've got some to add... AllanD has an aux tank (not the crappy Ranger one either)... The rear (square) tank from a early 90's Ford full-size truck 1/2/350 will fit... You can also use the MASSIVE 32 gallon tank from a full-size Bronco that will fit where the spare tire does... You must of course do some cutting, but having 53 gallons of fuel onboard would be a real nice thing... There was a article about this, but I can't seem to find it anymore... It was on www.explorer4x4.com but I don't remember exactly where...

BTW - All these options are good for a 2wd highway runner, or a 4x4 with some body lift... (The tanks are quite a bit deeper than the Ranger frame is [especially the Bronco tank])

Uhhh... Not exactly.

a Normal F-series tank won't fit and the 32gal full size bronco tank won't come close to fitting....

The "aux" tank I use actually came from a "narrow frame" F-350/450
in short an F350/450 with dualie rear wheels has a narrower frame
spacing behind the cab and THAT tank will fit. It's 21.55gallons
when topped up.

that plus the 23gal and change up front...

But that isn't the whole story.
I have a "diamond plate toolbox" in my bed.

the toolbox is an illusion because there is barely enough room inside
it for a few quarts of oil, a can of fix-a-flat and a lug wrench.

I could probably add my mail provided I didn't get much junkmail on that particular day, but not much else. inside the aluminum toolbox is another
fuel tank that holds nearly another 40gallons.

Excuse me, I mis-read... Not F-150 tank, but an E-150 (22 gal) tank is what was used... It seems to me like that might be the same tank as the rear DRW 350/450 tank...

I found the thread I was referencing... http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2241759&postcount=1

He states a FSB tank would fit, although it would be quite tall... I think the FSB tank might be an option for 3"+ of bodylift... It would hang 2-3" below the bottom of the frame rail...

I plan on making a custom tank that runs the length of the bed (6ft), and between the frame rails. The mounting will be tabbed/flanged to fit between the mounting brace of the bed and the frame and add at most .5inch to the bed height. It is planned to be 4 inches high from the rear to the drop of the frame. It then gets taller in the front (not sure how tall yet, but about 6-8inches). The tank will drain into the plastic tank on the truck. Steel vapor lines will be run to the back of the tank (high spot) along the top or side of the tank. It should add about 70 gallons, and still be emissions passable (though there is no emissions testing in Idaho). If I see the gauge start to drop from full, I will weep for my pocketbook.

damn allan how many gas tanks do you need

The Ultimate goal is from my driveway with all necissary (short) side trips
to my brother's driveway.

I live in Pennsylvania four miles off of I-476 halfway between I-78 and I-80

My brother lives about a mile from the I-25 offramp in Casper, Wyoming.

the exact distance, shortest route, no side trips between my place
and his is 1847miles.

I'm building a trailer on a hunk of Ranger frame with a longbox bed on it.
You just KNOW I'm gong to put fuel tanks in that too...

Why? Well I buy the gas they sell off at the local junkyard after
they drain it from the junkers:)

The more I carry with me the less I have to buy on the road.

I know this may be considered hijacking, but it seems the original question is predominantly answered.

Is there any tanks that can replace the 14 gallon tank in a Std cab/short bed Ranger? (without removing the spare tire). I've got a pretty good idea I already know what the answer is going to be, but it seems alot of folks have fiddled around with bigger tanks.

My 96 Ranger Super cab 2.3L has a 20gallon tank.

Truely, how fuel does the Ranger really need to hold? Unless you are doing a long distance trips all the time, I don't see the point going beyond 20gallons.

Did you not understand?

If you TOW you need more than 20gal because invariably if you
need to stop for fuel people in the gas stations manuever like complete dipshits when you are towing something making it a PITA to manuever
to and away from the pumps.

I have yet to tow anything through a gas station and failed to find some asshole that desperatly needs to have their attitude adjusted with a lenght of pipe.
