Best way to make more power?

I have an 02 4.0 SOHC 4x4 with 175,500 miles. Runs like a top. Slight miss from time to time but I'm blaiming that on corrosion on terminals. A lot of the plugs have corrosion in them. The 4wd was all jacked up because of it. That's how I got the truck for $700.

Now that I have most of the bugs worked out I'm looking to start making a little more power and better MPGs. I added an eBay short ram intake and good platinum plugs.

What else helps wake these engines up? Money is tight so I'm looking at simple mods.

On my to do list still is...
1. Muffler delete. I cut out the exhaust donut connection and welded in a section of pipe to fix a massive leak. I really liked the way it sounded with open pipe after the cats. Figure I'll just delete the muffler. Good idea or bad??

2. I saw the Volvo rad fan mod. I'm starting to source parts for that mod as well. I know that is always good for a few MPGs and always makes a big diff in throttle response.

Basically my plan is to find a good low mileage engine somewhere that I can rebuild. I've built quite a few engines so it's nothing for me. Figure I'll rebuild an angina and trans over the next year and then once things start to go bad with my current drivetrain I'll swap it out. I know adding more power to an engine with 175,500 miles isn't smart but I don't drive it hard. It's more about freeing up MPGs in the process. I already de really well with sencible driving. It's just always fun to see what I can squeeze out.

Little or no money, better MPG, and more power are all mutually exclusive ideas.

The best way to make more power is usually a bigger engine, but in you case, stock for stock, you are already on par with a 5.0.

Gues I'm looking to free up power more than make.

Make it breath better and reduce parasitic loss.

I know a power added or motor swap are the easiest but it's just not going to happen any time soon. Origenal plans were to do a 4.6 swap but by the time I build a 4.6 I mite as well save for a new 5.0.
