I have a quick question. I see it has a coolant tray, but I am not really sure what its purpose is. can someone inlighten me? I got a wire wheel for cleaning bolts so I am excited for that.
ya, it so you can douce parts in there after grinding them allot, i havent used it ever, mostly because im too lazy to put water in it, but its not a bad idea, just dont use a glass of iced yea to cool your parts, it doesnt taste too good
I usually just take what I finished grinding outside and dunk it in a bucket of water or turn the hose on and give it a dousing that actually does something.
However, more often that not, I simply proceed to burn myself with it.
When I Made a complete set of Cold chisels and Wood Chisels I used a really nice grinder with the nicest coolant holer. It was a good sized moveable dish that said "Dixie" on the bottom of it, made of some sort of paperlike material. Btw, I think Im going to jump in on that deal and get a new grinder for my garage. Thanks for the link.
Please, please, please hang a pair of goggles or a plastic shield on a hook above your grinder and use them. Many of my friends have eye injuries and one lost an eye sharpening the tungsten for his tig welder.
If you take hardened steel such as tool steel and grind the crap out of it, you can change its metallurgical properties. The coolant is to prevent that.
Annealing the tip of an HSS lathe cutter or drill bit sucks a** when you go to use it on steel.... You can use the coolant to quench it, or (better) to prevent changes in the first place.
Finally MAKG corrected most of you. You are suppose to keep the metal cool, if not you screw it up. When I am sharpening a bit or chisel, or really everything, I quench the object I am grinding every 2-3 passes. It helps to keep it cool, if you are getting the material so hot that it burns you, it is really no longer useful for its intended purpose.
