Axle Seals Front & Rear

It is in the shop right now new hangers and shackles put on, along with new ball joints. I could have done the ball joints myself, but I'm in Michigan. It is freezing here, still.

I was told they were still good by the mechanic.

Aw come on, its been staying above 20 for the last week. I'm in the process of swapping my axle out...

Well that, plus a muddy gravel driveway makes it hardly enjoyable.
Since you're swapping you're axle out I have a question for you!
When you open up the rear diff, and drain the fluid (obviously), how full do you want it when you're done? Topped right off?

I'm not sure. Checked my Haynes manual and all it says is to not over-tighten. On mine I just tighten the bolt until it snugs up, then a little past that. Don't forget a little RTV on both sides of the gasket.

Will do! Thanks! Is there anything else I should know about doing this?

Nothing off the top of my head, other than tightening the diff cover bolts in a criss cross pattern.

If you want to put new outer bearings in, get the Timken ones. Its up to you if you want to change them or not, check for excessive play and gritty rolling (once they are cleaned). If your concerned about it, it might not hurt to change them. Do the shafts show much wear where the seal sits?

The diff fluid would be an 80w-90, 75w-90 or 75w-140 won't kill it though. If your axle has a limited slip make sure what ever you buy has limited slip additive.

Drums will either be 9" or 10", have to measure them.

I was going to do the bearings, just because I don't want to have to do all of that work again. But do the Timken ones have a built in seal? Because the Autozone site says that it replaces the seal AND bearing. According to the axle chart on this site, I do not have a limited slip.
As for the wear, I have no idea how the axles look.

The ones with the bearing and seal are repair bearings...they are junk. Do not use them.
