Good afternoon,
I recently bought a 99 Ranger Off Road 4x4 with 150,000 miles.
I took it into the shop, just to tell me what was wrong with it. He told me the axle seals are leaking in the front and rear. I found the tutorial in the link below for the rear, and I'm still looking for one in the front. I just wondered what else should be changed while the axles are out. In the rear I was going to change the drums, shoes, seal (obviously), and the bearing. What else should I be looking at to change?
Thanks!
-Morgan-

Check for wear on the axle shafts. For heavy wear you may want to sleeve them, or just replace them. I just did my rear end the other year and it began to leak again because of the worn shaft.

For the front seals, I got mine at Ford. I checked Autozone, but they couldn't find anything. That may have changed in the last couple of years though.

Autozone has the front seals, not the rear. However I don't know which axle I have. Napa has two different rear seals with a ~1/2 inch difference in diameter.

New brake hardware couldnt hurt as well as brake cylinders. May as well start out fresh change the brake fluid.

I think I might have the front done in a shop and just do the rear myself, the front seems like way too much work with the front drivetrain.

They should have the rears...I just picked up a set for my 8.8 axle this past week.

Search for outer wheel seal on autozones website.

The axle tag, and door tag will tell you which one you have.

If your doing everything mentioned previously, thats pretty much everything.

The only other thing I would look ar while your under/around there would be the shackles and hangers. Yours (if still originals, like mine were) could be pretty well rotted away.

Leaf bushings and bolts may need attention as well thinking on doing mine this summer.

It is in the shop right now new hangers and shackles put on, along with new ball joints. I could have done the ball joints myself, but I'm in Michigan. It is freezing here, still.

I was told they were still good by the mechanic.
