Auto with no Reverse

I have a 2000 3.0l 4x4 ranger and I just finished rebuilding my transmission with low mile explorer parts after the teeth stripped off of my forward clutches. At firt I used teh explorer valve body and I only had first and second and then it would down shift into first again. Now with the ranger valve body I have all gears as normal but reverse. It works when it's cold but after running for 5 or so minutes it becomes a second neutral. I know the band isn't broken because it works when cold, and I know the seals on the modulator for reverse are good because I just changed them. I'm not sure what is causing it. Reverse was the only thing that worked before the rebuild so I'm lost. If you have any ideas please let me know.

So on further testing, it's not when it's warm. It's never really engaging all the way. If you sit and tap the throtle you can get it to go in for a second, and if you keep tapping it you can go places.

Did you get the bolts tight on the servo cover behind the valve body? I replaced the separator plate on my 97 once and to my surprise, I couldn't back it out of the shop when I was done. I left the bolts loose.....

Well, we took it to a trans shop for a free diagnosis and their rebuilder says that it is something internal. I've got a line on a ranger trans with 90k so i'm looking into that. I really don't feel like pulling this apart again.

Try buying a rebuild valve body off ebay, found some for around $75 shipped. According to the trans guy who did my auto to manual swap, these Fords have a lot of valve body wear issues. All you need is 1 of the like 20 valves to stick and you're up-shit creek.

If the old fluid was gritty or you find a lot of wear particles in the pan, a new(er) valve body is a necessity.

I'll keep that in mind if I keep it as a spare. The trans shop did say taht they just trash the old valve bodys and get new ones, so I guess they know about that too.

I tried to take apart my old valve body, only a few valves dropped/slid out of their bores like they should, some were stuck in there good and others could be pried out, but you could just feel the grit in there and see the wear marks on the valves.

Dealer friend also told me that if they find a lot of wear particles in the pan, they go ahead and order a new valve body (its about $1,000!). Trying to reuse a worn valve body means they'll be repairing it again soon enough.

Sonnax has like 20 kits to fix and update these valve bodies, yikes!
