My kid has been bugging me about fixing the annoying run lean after 5 minutes problem by removing the muffler. He couldn't get it off so he yanked the cat flange just behind the O2 sensor, and lo and behold the bugger now runs fine all day until the cops gave him a ticket. Hook it back up and about 10 minutes later, it is back to the old runs like crap warm.

Kragen has the cat assy for $75, so I'll stick one in it and see what happens there, or perhaps just grenade the cat guts with a pipe.

will keep you all posted

I think they are getting so old that this is becoming one of those standard problems on the 2.9s, like cracked head, fuel diaphram, fuel filter, tfi, etc.

yep, pulled mine off in FEB and it littered the ground with all sorts of poop, it was running real bad too

do you have to have both cats for the truck to run the same as it did with two cats? sorry to hi jack the thread but i want my 2nd gone..

prolly better off to replace it....for resale purposes.

don't think that the dual chamber unit has to go back in....there are some single chamber replacements out there that will do just fine. Would definitely pick one with high flow.

by doing the gutting of both cat chambers, in all likelyhood, create too much flow...depending on your muffler, or lack there of,...and cause the O2 sensor to react poorly, giving you as new set of symptoms.

i had it the factory 2 cat system in my b2. my b2 sat for about a year and the entire exhaust had holes in it, so i decided to rip it out. a factory replacement was $240 at autozone, so i said F that and went and found a universal highflow single cat from some website (autoparts warehouse i think). cost $50 with free shipping. i still havent put it in yet, i'm saving for new exhaust manifold or headers right now.

this stuff fell out of my cat when i removed it
