AOD to Manual T-5 Swap

I just bought a '91 Ranger with a 4.0L and a AOD. I am using this truck as my daily driver for work/commuting. Some time down the line, I will swap out the 4.0L for the 5.0L that came out of a Crown Vic. I am thinking before I do that I may swap to a T-5 so that I might have some ease of mind when snarled in 1-2 hour traffic.

For any of you that have done this; do I have to switch the computer for one out of a stick Ranger; like the Mustang owners do? i.e. A9P (automatics) to A9L (manual)? What computer (if any) do I use for this swap? I know the Splash had the 4.0L and 5-speeds; did these model year Rangers come with the 4.0L/5-speed combos? Or did the 3.0L Rangers have the 5-speeds?

I apologize for all of the questions. I am just running through my options for this truck. If I don't do this swap, I will probably get stuck with the 4.0L longer than I planned. If I do this swap, I'll be installing the 5.0L/T-5 tomorrow. LOL That's the way things work out for me nowadays. Thank you.

That 4.0L does not have an "AOD" behind it (probably A4LD), and it doesn't share the same bellhousing pattern as the 5.0L.

Computer needs to match the engine and transmission type. The computer you want is a manual computer for the model year of your 4.0L harness and engine. Same for a 5.0L.

A lot easier if you already have a manual truck.

Yeah, I had a 1992 Ranger with a 3.0L/5-speed. That truck was t-boned and totalled out a few years ago :(

My bad, I thought it would have been an AOD. I'll look it up in a moment, but while I am here, is the A4LD an overdrive transmission? I will probably stick with the automatic for a while because finding older vehicles in the junkyards around my area, is difficult. Unless I am really lucky. I'll just have to wait for the 5.0L/T-5 swap :)

Yes, it is an over drive transmission.

Working on a t-5 swap here into my manual '87, but I am broke. :( Think all I will be able to afford this year is getting my body fixed up, found rust along a seam under the blower box, whole dash has to come out before I sent it out to the shop.

That's exactly what's killing/killed my current S-10. It has a new paint job......covering up a lot of poorly laid bondo and a rotting underbody. Of which, is rotting so badly that I have lost 4 out of the 6 body mounts for the cab. I welded two because at that point I didn't care about ride quality (which didn't suffer because it rides hard anyways). I would like to keep this truck for a DD because I don't give a crap about it. But this Ranger presents an opportunity to utilize the 5.0L that I got sitting in the garage. I would have sent the engine on its way, but now I have a reason to keep it. I just need to complete some of the projects before I do this swap.

Whilst getting an AOD for my Crown Vic project, I found 2 - 5 speed Rangers at the JY. One of them is a 1992 Ranger. I imagine that if I wanted to do the 5.0L/Mustang T-5 swap, I'd get the clutch pedal assembly out of this truck. What else would you recommend that I pull from this truck for the T-5 swap.
