Is this AOD toast?

Hi, looking to buy a 1990 regular cab 2WD 2.3 W/AOD. Vehicle sat for years in a garage, little used. New owner bought it recently and transmission began leaking, stopped working while caught in traffic. Owner added fluid and it drove, but now needs to warm up before going into gear. Probably dirty fluid, but can this be repaired without rebuild? Thx!

That would be a A4LD not a AOD.

Check fluid level and fuel condition. If not low on fluid it will probably need a rebuild.

Fluid condition in the transmission will be the color of it on the dipstick. Brand new it will be a pink or very light red. Decent used fluid will be red. Well used fluid will be burgundy or maroon. Failed fluid will be brown.

If the fluid is dark, I would change it and try it. Trans fluid is not cheap, but it would be cheaper than a trans rebuild for sure.

First step is fluid and filter change and go from there, if it is full and still doesn't work right there's likely something wrong.

Also, the bands probably need adjusted… two bands are adjustable and the third is not, no need to pull the trans either for any of this service work. If you’re changing fluid and filter, the pan has to come down. My personal opinion is that if the pan is down, you might as well throw a shift kit at it and new reverse O-rings.
