AOD 4th gear to neutral

Hey all,

AOD runs great from 1-2 2-3 but when i place the shifter to 3-4 the trans stalls out and goes to N, no matter the RPM. from my readings it is a common problem with these transmissions that the 4th gear band slips and needs either tightening or replacing. I can not get a decent reading on if this "tightening"can be done with the transmission in the truck, or do i need to take it out?

Anyone tightened the bands themselves? cheers

Not sure about the AOD, but I know that the eventual successor to that, the 4R70, does not have adjustable bands and it’s all controlled by valving and hydraulic pressure. I’ve been tinkering with my 4R70W and I came across a thing about it where the 4th band servo/pin bore can wear and you can lose 4th as a result. I suspect that since these transmissions are related (my shift kit is for AODE, 4R70 and 4R75), this may be what’s going on and/or the 4th band is broken.
