Another FW 78/79 dana 44 swap

shoulda just picked up a 60 :buttkick:

what am i talking about, youll wheel it break it upgrade it and wheel it more before i get mine done :icon_rofl:

Still working on the gears . Had to get a xtra set of carrier bearings to make install bearings out of . Would of used the old bearings but I didn't have anything to pull them off with . This is the first time I have done one where the carrier shims went under the bearings . Will be working on them again tonight if I can deal with the heat .

That's one thing I dislike about Dana axles. PITA to setup gearsets. I buzzed out a set of bearings with my dremel for setup bearings. Took forever.

You don't 'have' to shim it from the inside, haha... TJ 44 rears shim from the outside! I found that out after tearing my front end apart on U.A. to replace the broken parts in my detroit and found .014" backlash. The shop I had set it up must have done it real loose! I used a bearing cap as a template and cut shims out of popcans to get it back down to .010" before putting it all back together at Rausch Creek, wish they had caught that in the vid......lol.

That is what I did but with a burr in a die grinder . Still took forever .

I could have , but the 70s 44s are not really made for outer shims like a newer 44 or 8.8 is .

Got the backlash @ .008 but the pattern says the pinion is too close . And unlike a 8.8 the pinion shims are under the race so i have to knock it back out with a brass punch . Maybe tomorrow it's too damn hot .

but once setup its easy to keep bearings in them.....not a crush sleeve fan.

damn you better get your practice in greg you have to help me with mine! (in the A/C if its hot)

I made a set up race too.

I've had the best luck getting the pinion depth right by reading the pattern first, then pulling the backlash into spec with the carrier shims. Just don't let the backlash get too sloppy while you're setting the pinion depth of course.

Pinion depth good - set backlash - recheck pattern - 90% of the time its good - seal it up.

Shit I have Jeremy coming over Sunday to help me with mine . Your 60 is newer so the shims could be inside or out I don't know . Do you have everything still together so you know where the shims go . Also we need to measure your shims to get a starting point .

When I first but the carrier in there was no backlash couldn't even turn the pinion or ring . So we had to go ahead and set the backlash .

Coilovers came in today and I was pissed . One of the schrader valves was broke off so oil was on everything and no nitrogen in it . And got the tape measure out and they are 10" travel not 12" like he said . This is one of the few times I have had a problem buying used parts , but I called him and he refunded $100 to my paypal . Gonna have to make them work .

Working tomorrow then Ivy Tech car show / dyno day starts at 4pm so no more work until sunday morning . Hoping for 450rwhp with the Cobra .

Try to make em work if you want, but coilover's are a pretty big part of your suspension. If I designed around 12" of travel, that's what I'd run. Fix the schrader and resell em. Chalk it up as a loss and buy what you need.

I've almost stopped buying used parts all together. There always seems to be something wrong that rubs me the wrong way. Everyone wants something for nothing.

Worked on the coilover with the broke schrader valve tonight . Couldn't find very much info on what kind or how much oil to put in . So I got some 10wt. oil from a motorcycle shop and with the shock compressed filled it through the schrader hole . After getting bubbles out by cycling the shock slowly I put 150psi of co2 in it . I used co2 because nobody in town is willing to fill a shock that doesn't go on a atv or motorcycle . Am I in deep shit or is this going to work ? Guess I need to do the same thing to the other coilover so they react the same .

I can help you out Gregg, I've got the setup to fill the shocks. I'm actually using a paint ball N2 tank, remote trigger with the NAL valve, only thing I need to get is a regulator, right now the one I have is set at about 850 I think. I'm trying to locate one that is 450, which is good for the shocks...
