My credo
the grey-t escape
So, Ive found another gen 2 escape, 2009/4cyl/fwd. they are asking $3K for it, has 155K miles, looks decent, usual rust over rear tire at arch but frame & liftgate are ok. I asked about it and was told they could come down some on price because the electric power steering is “out”. (didnt say how much they would take off) They said “ford” would have to program the module- I assume a new one (which is $700-ish) So Im guessing it would take $1,000 to make it driveable, So- who knows about electric power steering? I know nothing, I believe its a variable ratio thing, Should I walk (away) or continue? I dont know how hard it would be to drive If I just let it be like a manual steering vehicle. It would be great to have a 25mpg work car again with a/c and a better heater in the winter. Id still use the ‘11 V6 escape to tow with, not sure about the 2.5 escape 4, on paper it seems like a decent engine. Its another 6 speed auto (wish it was a manual)

Tempting.

I don't have the experience with those systems....to advise yay or nay...but I would be buying a manual....if I wanted it.

I would try to get them to 3500 down the road with the steering fixed...and see how it goes....

I had an 05 XLT 4 cyl AWD for several years. Not sure if its the same engine but we had no issues with it. Had it for 3 years before we traded up to a 12 explorer.

Ive never seen a gen 2 manual, I know they were available, but only with the “4”. Gotta love the work-freindlyness of a 4. Love the ‘11 V6 but the back -bank coils take 2 hours to change, front bank 10 min. I do wonder how much longer the ‘11 has left, its near 180K now. She got a turbo-4 equinox awd back in august, loves it. Cant say im a fan. Love the mpg’s but that’s about it. The escape is her work car now. I think the 4 cyl changed from gen 1 to gen 2. The 2.5 (08) is around 170-ish hp @6K.
Such b.s. ratings, youd have to leave it in 1st and go 50 to be at 6K rpm.

That's the Mazda l. Real good engine.

This gen escape and the edge I like the most out of the Ford jeeps. Though the Maverick is growing on me

My brother has about the same thing but AWD, he's had it for just shy of 1 year and put like 17k on it and around 190k on the clock... not a rocket ship but he gets 23-24mpg combined and it's not too bad, he did a lot of research and landed on that vintage. I know nothing about the steering either so can't help there... the transmissions can be kinda cranky but apparently just a drain and refill of the 4 quarts you can get to makes a big difference.

Well its still there so Im going to go seriously look at it tomorrow, would be so nice to have a better heater in the winter, a/c in the summer and 20+ mpg as a work commuter, plus keep the ranger out of the winter salt. Be cool if I could put a turbo on it. lol

Bought it, when I asked about the steering was told they went ahead and fixed it. Price didnt go up. So with tax temp tag was 3,600 out the door. Im happy with it, will be a much more comfortable drive to & from work. So much room under the hood compared to the ‘11 V6 awd we already have. Tires were new back last july . Rides a little different from the ‘11. I suppose it weighs less. Aside from a trailer hitch/wiring harness, im not sure what Im going to do accessory wise. Could make it a twin to the other one.

My wife had a 10...it was a good ride reliabilty wise. Worst seats ever though...and no power lol

There is a noticeable difference between the 4 cyl vs V6 engine but will be fine as a daily driver.

Oh yeah hers was a 4 and it was plenty for DD use. Just really blah to drive

Congrats on the addition to the fleet, seems like a pretty solid deal even if it's over a decade old.

You wanna talk about blah to drive? Get behind the wheel of a GMC Acadia.. good lord... eating a loaf of white bread dipped in water has more flavor&flair than one of those sad things.

I like the look of those older Escapes. As far as I'm concerned, Ford ruined the Escape when they did the refresh.
