amsoil your thoughts

The biggest issue I have is where Exxon/Mobil has spent millions of dollars in research (along with the other big companies) and at anytime when a competitor comes along with something they say is better the big companies will just go and turn it up another notch.

Redline & Amsoil are far from the tech and monies the big companies can put into products. Another thing is if these were the top of the top why aren't they sold everywhere? Amsoil is sold like Amway. Redline is almost non existent around here. Royal Purple has it's fans but it's doesn't move. We sell maybe a case a month?

I understand people having preferences and it's all good but as I said before show me concrete proof and I'll switch. We were forced to sell Valvoline Synpower a while back and say how good it was. I told customers what I used and even contacted Valvoline requesting the testing they said beat Mobil 1 in. They gave me a test study number. I asked for the results with specs and they said they couldn't release them.:annoyed:

I will sing a products quality to the highest mountain if you just give me proof. Until then Mobil 1 will continue to sell 50 to 1 or better than the other synthetics.

actually amsoil does all of the tests and gives burnoffs and breakdowns and filtration micron specs. ect.

Let me re-phrase then. Independant study. Company sponsored studies are fine but let an unbiased lab do it.

90% of performance shops ive ever walked into sold Amsoil. I am an amsoil dealer and the shop i used to run delt with amsoil. You dont find it because you arent looking. I bet if you went to their website you would find many distributors and dealers close to you (unless you live in the middle of no-where, but you still may)

Ok. Now I''m not flaming Amsoil. The statement was to say what mainline store carries it so most of the general public can look at features and benefits? I've been in the auto parts aftermarket for 25 years. I have never seen it sold at Zone, Advance, Pep Boys, Oreilly's etc.... If I was a rep for them I'd be blanketing the market as much as possible. I do not knock a product, just like to give the best recommendation possible.

oh i didnt think you were, but with all do respect, there is a reason stores like those dont carry amsoil.

Just take a look at the links posted, and then remember. Those tests are with fresh oil and amsoil is number 1 in every single test, and look at the flux in the rank of other oils, inconsistant. Then find some of the amsoil tests and other tests of the oils after about 10k-15k-20k-25k-30k miles. Amsoil by far surpasses the competition at those levels.

Mobil1 is a good oil, but its not as good as amsoil.

hows this for a scientific test ..... I call it the "Pack of Cigarettes" test.

I was running Amsoil in the big rigs ...... 7 of which were 12.7L Series 60 Detroits. I was running amsoil because I got a huge volume discount and the delivered.......the 7 Detroits had issues with vibration ........ enough vibration to pleasure a truckstop hooker .........

on to the POC test ........

pull the hood up with the engine running and place a pack of cigarettes on the steer tire ........ it will vibrate and bounce off the tire as quick as you can say ..... "Look, they are bouncing off the tire" .........

swiched to Royal Purple ....... they offered me a better discount and would also sell and deliver to me Baldwin filters ........

did the POC test and there was considerably less vibration ...... took the time it takes to smoke one regular filtered cigarette for the pack to fall off the tire ........ plus I showed a fleet wide average increase in fuel economy buy 1/10 of a mpg across the board ......

I dont know enough about big motors to tell you if thats good or bad, but I can ask somebody this week that i knows all about it and maybe give a more "scientific answer"

LOL that POC test made me howl!

as for me...well my b2 has 300 000 km's on it, pisses oil outta the valve covers...i only run whats cheapest for now...gotta change the oil anyways...that diesel oil is getting REALLY dark... LOL

I know a guy that changed the oil in his Nissan Pathfinder when he first bought it at 140k, and then never changed it again. He wrecked it at 160k and decided to change the oil while he was rebuilding parts of the truck. Yeah, it was sludge. And yes, he still drives it. It has 190 or so on it now. Although I think he started to change the oil once he got some money put into the thing. He just picked it up for a winter beater and drove it year 'round because it wouldn't die. Makes me want to fix mine but well.. it will never be street legal again. =[

I've always used the cheapest oil in my cars, and then I used the better oil for a bit while it was on sale. I noticed no difference in performance or fuel economy. It was the same color and consistency when I took it out. I changed the oil in my car and now I'm getting 22-25 mpg on average. I was getting 22-25 before. Sure, it vibrates less, but that's because I changed the wheel bearing that has been messed up for the 5000 miles I've owned the car for, and for however many miles it was that the PO had it.

Oil is oil IMO.

Amsoil or bust for me. I switch over everything in my truck to Amsoil.

McDonalds sells the most cheeseburgers, are they the best? NSync and Britney Spears sell a ton of records, are they the best musicians? James Patterson sells a ton of books, does that make him the best author?

Sales is marketing, not quality.

BTW, my local Fleet Farm carry Amsoil now, and they're a larger chain store.

Oil wars aside, I run whatever is on sale. It lubricates and if I can get 200k out of an engine on non synthetic that is just fine with me. Anything more is a waste and I would be better off spending the extra change I saved by not buying synthetics on a car wash.

I can clue you in ..... it want the Amsoil that caused the vibration .... it was present before switching to synthetic..... those engines vibrate .... thats all there is to it....

I should add ..... I only change the oil when the lab tells me I absolutely have to........ the Kenworth has over 100,000 miles on the RP that is in it right now and is due to be changed here very shortly. I am not knocking Amsoil ..... its a good product and I used the same oil change interval with it ..... only when the lab said it had to come out..... that varied truck to truck.... not all my trucks would have gone 100,000 miles with out an oil change. I switched from Amsoil to RP because they offered me a better discount AND would deliver the filters I wanted ..... the Amsoil rep wanted me to use his filters ..... I preferred Baldwin filters on the rigs .... because every truck stop in america has them.....

Synthetic, IMO, is a waste if you are not using by-pass filtration, you need by-pass filtration to extend the drain interval to a point to justify the extra cost of the synthetic

and you still should be getting an analysis done at what ever you oil change schedule is ....... so you know when the oil needs to come out ......

:annoyed: , oil wars, great.

I won't put any info in that I have not tried myself. My Ranger's 2.3L has seen 3 brands of oils from me. First kind was Castrol. Good oil, had nothing wrong with it. Second oil was Mobil 1. Once again, good oil, had nothing wrong with it. Third oil, which I have been running the longest, is Royal Purple. Good oil, engine seems to run better and smoother. Most noticable is when I switched oils in the tranny. Castrol ATF, shifts were improved feel over the orginal 75K mile ran oil. Mobil 1 Syn ATF, shifts became harder, firmer and solid. Not something I liked in the manual tranny. Switched to Royal Purple Syncromax, shifts became softer but solid engagement.

I use Royal Purple mostly on all my engine and friction needs. I know the cost is high, but I only average one oil change a year. And change the oil every 5k miles.
