Air intake temp bi-metal sensor vacuum hoses

Out of curiosity, I checked if the vacuum lines on the air intake bi-metal sensor on top of the air filter housing were connected correctly. They were not! This is the right way below. I saw both ways on internet photos. For me this meant that the manifold vacuum line was outboard and the vacuum motor line, inboard. You would think the other way? The sensor may have been changed recently and swiveled around.
The engine now runs better when cold and seems to be smoother when accelerating. Less soot in the exhaust pipe. An increase in mpg would be nice.
